Boeing Wa, transplant to SC
I am looking at a relocation to the new Boeing Charleston plant, currently work out of the Everett Wa plant. From reading through the forum we have been looking at homes in either Summerville or Mt. Pleasant as they both look like nice places live . So far I really like the bang for your buck in Summerville. How are the schools in Summerville and MP? I am also wondering about the commute time of the two. Our family likes outdoor activities like fishing, golf and bike riding. Are there walking/riding trails? My daughter is really into soccer and would like to get her into a good program out there. I did live in Savannah for four years while in the Army so I am familiar with the low country did like it down there. We would also like to find a community that is good for younger kids and families.
Thanks for your time. We are having the same anxieties as all would in a move but the family is really warming up to not living under gray skies for 9 months out of the year.

Summerville and DD2 schools are pretty good in general, MtP schools are on par with DD2 schools and are at the top of CCSD. I am not sure of the Soccer programs. There are lots of things to do in Summerville.
The commute from Summerville to where the new plant is being built is not that bad, I can make it there in about 20 minutes from my home in Summerville at 7am....

Summerville is more bang for your buck but the commute will be worse. Basically everything backs up from Summerville to the interchange of I-26 and 526 and Dorchester Road is equally congested. Outer Mt Pleasant can also be a bit of a traffic hassle.
Mt Pleasant has better schools but is an attendence are within the Charleston County School District that has everything from one of the top 20 schools in the country to schools that resemble Guam in terms of acheivement. Summerville (Dorchester District 2 areas) has a better rating than the whole of Charleston County but not better than the schools in Mt Pleasant. Look at each school individually also.
We are great for fishing, okay for golf and not so great in terms of riding trails. One other area that might be worth a look is West Ashley on highway 17 south of 526. But definitely not outside of 526 on 61 (traffic hell.)

Having helped quite a few relocate to the area, Summerville, and specifically the Dorchester Rd. area of Summerville might serve you better with regard to commute times. Dorchester Rd. gets backed up, but if you're trying to commute from Mt. Pleasant across 526 to the Boeing plant you could get just as hemmed up. For the Dorchester Corridor, you'll be in Dorchester District 2, which tests very well annually. All of the counties have a parks and rec department for sports, and soccer is pretty popular here (just finished coaching little ones this past Fall and had a blast!), in addition to whatever the individual schools offer with regard to sports.
Moving across the country can be a hassle, but focusing on 10 months of sunshine vs. 10 months of gray skies will certainly help.
Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the replies. I am not worried about a 20 to 30 min commute. Living in the Seattle area anything under an hour is light traffic.
I did a lot of Salmon fishing up here and plan on getting back into Bass and Saltwater fishing down south.
10 months of sun sounds great!
If anyone is interested here is a great link for watching the progress of the new Boeing Plant being constructed. You can set it up for time lapse from day one.

Traffic is not nearly as bad here especially for those who are moving from a real city. Plenty of lakes for Bass fishing, you can also go up and down the inlets. Great flounder can be found here.
Unless you want to be stuck watching the Braves here, I'd get DirecTV for the Mariner games ... That is if your still awake @ 10P to watch them

marinerfan I suggest you look into the Oakbrook area of Summerville, or anywhere past Ladson and Dorchester roads...
I've been making the trip from there to right by where you'll be working and on down the road several more miles in about 25 mins for the last 13 yrs or so...
tons of sports in S'Ville, school and rec ball of all kinds... it's well known for being a sports town, one of many stories - summervilleathletics.com Football news
DD2 (Dorchester District 2) schools are the best in the state and have been for many years, it's why I moved into this area when my daughter was young
we have miles of walking/biking/running trails... there's more fishing here than you can shake a pole at, salt or fresh water... lots of hunting too...
my wife works for TTC and works closely with Boeing on this new plant and the training for it, and I know several people that already work there... I think you and your family will be very happy here...
good luck and have a safe trip
btw I'm a native, not a realtor...

The people we have helped relocate (Boeing) have looked at both areas. Most are leaning to Mount Pleasant because of all the amenities and closeness to beach and downtown.
Both areas are great areas. Summerville being cheaper but most of the newer affordable housing is spread out from the shopping areas. Mount Pleasant being close to historic downtown, beach and more shopping and restaurant options.
Driving distance can vary depending on where you live in each area. For me in Park West-Mount Pleasant- to Boeing would be about 25 minutes assuming no major traffic issues.
