Default Safe zone in downtown Charleston??

Hi everyone!

I'm moving to Charleston and looking for a place to live downtown. I heard about a 'line' separating the safe neighbourhoods from the 'bad' ones. I heard different things - some people told me this line was Cannon St., others told me it was further north. I don't really know what to think...?

Dodeline

Calhoun Street would be a better division point than Cannon St. South of Calhoun is going towards the College of Charleston, Market, Battery, good restaurants and shopping. You might find some nice apartmenst or carriage houses there....or if you are willing to spend upwards of 1 million $ than you will find some nice homes to buy too. North of Calhoun is rough....very dangerous...drug haven and on an average of one or two shootings per day.

Thanks for your answers!

Does that mean that even around Cannon St. it's not safe to live or even walk?!

Cannon St. is not a safe place to live or walk. There are drive-by shootings, robberies, muggings, rapes, drug deals, and murders in that area weekly, if not daily (Cannon and streets running off of it).

I wouldn't go that far north. There are areas north where you would be okay. I would say the line where you could say you would be absolutely safe is Calhoun Street with some nice areas north of there.

They are working on revitalizing the area of King Street between Calhoun and Cannon, and it has gotten visually more pleasing to the eye recently. Cannon eventually is supposed to get cleaned up too, so I hear. I would not feel comfortable walking around the Cannon area now though. Although I have seen unknowing tourists stray into these areas before, they probably turn around real quick.

I agree. There are a number of areas that are improving, but they are not at a point yet where I would want to walk or live in those areas.

I have to disagree. There are some fine places to live right on the other side of Calhoun. Lots of college kids live there. I'd say check it out in person to make your decision.

Dodeline, please just stay clear of the Cannon Street area - especially when walking and especially at night. Just "some motherly" advice.
