According to Orbitz, for the April 29 - May 2 weekend, a non-stop roundtrip CRW-IAD-CRW ticket would be $406.

One stop flights, round-trip, (via Detroit or Charlotte) are $417 and up.

I've flown a bunch of times, and it's more expensive than to fly to Vegas or Florida. The planes are tiny and terrifying in the wind. I assume the cost is so high because the planes are only full on holidays.

Meant to add.. it's cheaper to fly to vegas or Florida as a destination from DC than Charleston. It's probably sort of expensive to fly out of Charleston to anywhere because it'll always be a small commuter plane.

Huntington is usually cheaper than Charleston strangely enough.

Indeed.

For the same April 29 - May 2 long weekend I used in the previous example, a 1-stop roundtrip from Huntington (via Detroit) to Dulles is $284 on Delta. (Actually, it's Delta Connection operated by Comair and Pinnacle. Maybe you get to sit next to the pilot )

If you book early u can get r/t much cheaper. 1h vs 10-12h train (whole day) is big difference. Driving lays in between- 5 h. I'd go for airplane.

As an alternative, you can drive the 3 hours to Morgantown and catch the 1/2 hour direct flight to Washington on the same commuter type aircraft.
