Arrow Moving to Charleston, Some help Please :)

Hi all, I've been reading the forum for the past fews months before my move to South Charleston. I have been searching the classifieds, craigslist, etc, etc. Most of the nicer apartment complexes are completely booked or on the back porch of a lovely Chemical Plant... YUM! I best it taste good with the morning coffee. I've also looked through the MLS listings and called to see if leasing would be an option and have an agent, slowwwwwly helping me.

I had a few questions: I noticed "Brittany Place Apartments" which is in Winfield right down the road from a large Chemical Plant :/ Do any of you live near there or know the "down-low" on how bad that is for your health, any problems in the area? I'm trying to find the healthiest place I can and would like to keep it under 1000/month. However, I could possibly go up to 1500/Month if it was perfect I would realllly like a garage. Any help is GREATLY appreciated! I will be working near the Marshall Graduate School in South Charleston.

** I didn't know if any of you in the area are looking to rent as well. Anyone consider renting a large home and splitting the rent? Male, 27, Single, No pets, Don't smoke.

Thanks!!

Hi Shane,

I would recommend the Pinch/ Elkview area. It is about 5mins from downtown Charleston, and 10-15mins from the Grad School. There are some new town houses style apartments with garages. I'd have to look up more info, but they seem to be doing really well because they keep building more units. There is also some apartments with garages in Cross Lanes, about 5 mins from the Grad school. I'd go with Pinch though because Cross Lanes has a traffic problem and it is more prone to crime. Pinch is a small suburb with some really nice neighborhoods, and really close to town.

I'd say you could find a place for under a 1000 easy, but truth is that I'm not in the market so I wouldn't know 100%. As far as health goes, most of the plants are fine, but the Bayer Crop Science Plant near Dunbar has a smell to it. Also the Power Plant near Winfield has a smell too. I don't think that the smell is a problem for the people of Winfield though. There is also units with garages near the Grad School on Jefferson Road. They are really nice, but I don't know the name.

Allow me some time to look up some info for ya.

Good Luck,

Chris

Thanks for the quick reply Chris, I really appreciate it. Might be a dream world, however.. it would be amazing to get hardwood floors and granite counter tops with stainless steel appliances. I know that might be a stretch! The ones on Jefferson Road, would be great if you had any info on them. I'll cross my fingers hoping they aren't full!

I really appreciate the help!

Maddy's Cove in Pinch

removed - not allowed.

Here are some good links

couldn't find anything about the Jefferson Road Apartments, but I might be by there tomorrow so I'll check.

Is a small house for rent out of the question? I'm sure you could find one close to work for almost nothing.

Thanks Chris, I'll check out Maddy's Cove.. I saw some pictures and they look nice. However, it looked like they were just for sale.

I have called just about all of the "decent" apartment complexes in the area and the good ones are booked solid for quite awhile. I think I was able to find a place in Charleston Center Village or something like that. However, I would really like a garage and most of them do not offer that amenity. Do you know anything about Charleston Center Village or the area?

A small house would be fine! However, most of the small houses I've seen look as if they came through the great depression! haha. I'm thinking I'll just have to start driving around when I get up there next week. Maybe if you could point me in some good areas, so I know where to start Honestly, I would consider renting out an old warehouse or something of that nature... might be a cool idea.. or a really bad one....

The Charleston Center Village is right in downtown, and I'd say in the best location as far as walking to places. It is right beside the Charleston Town Center/ Civic Center/ Marriott/ which means that you would be living right in the heart of town. Heck Panera Bread is just a block south of you, and the other 4 or 5 dozen restaurants in downtown are within a 5min walk. The only bad part about those apartments would be that near by there are some low income units. But the good thing is that they are undergoing full out renovations, and new construction. In fact, those apartments look so nice now, that you'd think that they were for middle class.

There is another place in that area called Clendenin Square, which has garages. I tried looking up some info, but I couldn't find anything. Maybe you'll have better luck!

There is a weekly publication that comes out every Tuesday called the Ad Bulletin. It has more listings than the newspaper will because it is free to place ads in it as opposed to the newspaper which charges. They usually have a lot more rental listings. There are lots of small rental units around (maybe 4-8 units) in addition to the large apartment complexes. They are not online yet though. I just checked and their site is under construction. If you want, send me a private message with your email address and I'll scan the rental section pages and email them to you.

The one BR do not have garages and go for $900.

The two BR units have a garage and go for around $1100-$1200.

This is hearsay but it should be close.
