That's true, but 70% of the I79 traffic enters and exits I79 at U.S. 19, 50 miles north of Charleston, then proceeds to run the gauntlet of speed traps on that road, merging into I77 at Beckley. A lot of roads do cross at Charleston. The problem is the town is not close enough to major population centers to really capitalize on it. Most of those folks are just passing through to Charlotte or Cleveland, or to Richmond or Cincinnati.

Charleston DOES capitalize on it. How many cities of 50,000 have this many hotels and restaurants?

It is normal for a state capital to be overly developed

I am not supporting it, nor criticizing it.
Just stating a fact.
Go to any state capital, look at its size, and compare it to cities of similar sizes. State economies develop more because of all the government money. Same thing with DC and federal money. Find me a city of 500,000 that is developed like DC.
Charleston's economy is full of, and supported by, pork. So is almost every state capital, with a few exceptions, like Austin.
As for as state capitals go Charleston is kinda underwhelming, and most are much nicer, but for WV it is a really nice city. It makes sense because WV, for the most part, is a poor state.
If WV was a rich state Charleston would be a lot more developed.
