Man that is a disturbing trend. I wonder if JCPennys will be soon added to the list since they recently announced they would be closing a lot of stores.

How is the outback doing there? They recently announced they would also be closing a bunch of locations this year too (Just like JCPennys, no locations were given).

Outback seems to be doing quite well on the weekends at least.

Some of those are duplicate locations (Staples, TGIF, 5 Guys, Wendys, 7/11, Bob Evans)

It's sad to see any business close, but those ones have locations still open in the area. Sears and Gander Mountain will be hard to replace, but the rest will have replacements or something similar (with the exceptions of House of Luxe and 5th Quarter. The Fifth Quarter property could very possibly become a hotel, and a restaurant could be featured within it. Value City Furniture reportedly has expressed interest in finding a new location.

Also, there has been plenty of new businesses within the last few years taking up once empty spaces or properties. Rural King, Aldi, Sheetz, 3 separate Bojangles, Starbucks, Genesis Cafe, Red Fire Asian BBQ, Barnyard, CVS, The Block, etc...

Retail and restaurants fluctuate. There is a planned shopping center at Southridge, and other proposed and planned restaurants and stores across the valley. The City of South Charleston is also ambitious about attracting more retail along its new TIF corridor.

The mall in theory could replace Sears with multiple stores, like an Old Navy, Barn's & Noble, Planet Fitness, . Gander Mountain could become two or three smaller spaces, and the recently closed restaurants could be an opportunity for new and more popular chains to set up shop. I was thinking that the TGI Fridays spot could be an excellent spot for a Cheddar's or Red Robin. Bob Evans could become a Panda Express or Starbucks. 5 Guys at the mall could be a "Which Wich".

These are just some ideas, but all is not lost around here. Could it be better??? Sure. But there is no reason to hit the panic button.
