I saw a news blurb earlier that there is a dedication ceremony scheduled for Tuesday July 10th for the first part of the project.

The fields look nice, but they need to do some serious work to the existing park and mound area. That place could be really nice.

I was out at Valley Park for the first time since there massive revamping. I was really impressed with their facilities. It’s a shame that Kanawha County has let their facilities fall way behind.

Yes that new Valley Park is amazing. My kids love it. And it stays packed up until dark every evening. We will be using the turf ball fields this weekend for a baseball tourney.

So we are down there tonight at practice and right across the street a man gets shot and murdered. How long before stray bullets start crossing into the playing area? As a precaution WVSU locked down their campus but in between the campus and the shooting are fields full of kids and no lockdown. Might want to put up a 6 foot high or more barrier on the eastern side of these fields. This was a main concern I had about these fields and that area. Hundreds of kids are practicing there every evening and need protected from stray bullets because shootings are frequent in that area.

that is terrible John. Luckily none of the kids were in the cross-fire. That is a pretty bad neighborhood next to the soccer fields at Shawnee. I agree, a barrier would certainly help.

Wow, how sad! Why can’t we ever get anything nice that isn’t ruined by the stupidity and insanity of others?

Awful! Not only is it dangerous but hearing/witnessing a shooting (even from a distance) can a mentally traumatizing experience for a child.

This needs to be addressed asap.

Did Institute ever become annexed by Dunbar? I know they were trying and seeing opposition. I know Dunbar doesn’t want the liability of dealing with the crime, but a regular police presence is needed. The county sheriffs can certainly have a presence at the park. Funny how this is also right beside the State Police Academy.

I think if they want to make this a soccer park that can annually attract out of state visitors WVSU and the county need to buyout the closest immediate housing and do some improvements in the area. I have a feeling that they probably didn’t want to scare the kids and parents but safety in that area be it related to crime or chemical leaks needs some work. There are probably 300 to 400 kids there most evenings now for various middle school and high school soccer teams. UC soccer was also there last night. You see some youth football too.

The Kanawha County sheriff’s deputies were heavily patrolling the area afterwards but there were multiple shots fired. Shots fired is a frequent problem in that area. They need a brick barrier around the park to protect the kids from bullets.
