Epicenter definitely has taken it a step further. But if one is working/living uptown then Howl at the moon, Whiskey river, Alley Cat, Forum,Rock Bottom, Therapy, Cans, Ri-Ra and likes become too familiar too quick. A sports bar, a live music venue (variety is surely required). After having frequented the place for only 3 months the bartender could remember my favourite drink!!! Thats when I knew either the options are limited or Iam frequenting it too often!!!

How about a place that offers dance performance with food? Say belly dancing with food..not a shady joint but something that caters to all audience, may be offers lessons too!!!

A nice smooth jazz venue would be superb for downtown Charlotte, with an A1 guest from time to time would be excellent, such as artists like Boney James/Mindy Abair/Pat Metheny.

@Rollingon - Well, the NC Music Factory isn't really Uptown, but it's close. You really think a belly-dancing restaurant, or the like, would survive uptown? I don't.

@westcoast - There was a jazz bar uptown and it moved. My guess would be that they couldn't remain profitable/weren't busy enough to justify uptown rent.

Now wine bars and cheese tasting are also good options. But its not always just the plain sit down I stare at your face while you stare at mine that makes for a thriving night life nor is it noisy bars blaring music. I want a mix. A mix that caters to the older banker and the newbie, to singles and families. Uptown charlotte with all its options is considered by the locals a place to go for jobs and then catch up on a drink before they head back to farmville!!! Colleagues seldom asked their partners to drive uptown for dinner or happy hours. Typically it would be a thur evening when people caught up for a beer, Else its a singles scene.

What really bored me was how Charlotte uptown has a text book choice of each option...and those are all chains. I guess my whole gripe is against chains. I would prefer family owned over chains.

University area on the other hand has Boardwalk Billy's ....I love that place.....cool, relaxed, unpretentious and fun place where people are having conversations, a good laugh, some food......Its doesnt have a great decor nor serves gourmet food but it has 'life'.....I wish charlotte had one such setting (lake shoppes at JM Keynes Drive) every few miles...that would breathe the much needed verve and vivacity in suburban charlotte life.

Having been one for four straight years some time ago, I've got nothing against drunk college kids. But I think the Epicenter is nasty and hasn't done much for uptown Charlotte. The lobby and bar area of the Ritz however, is spectacular.

I don't see Charlotte, or many cities for that matter, getting any big skyscrapers any time soon. Technology is changing the way people work. There's less and less need to go to a bricks and mortar office every day.

I'm very impressed with the new park that's being built alongside the creek over by Kings Drive. I think it's going to be really nice once it's done. That whole area is such an enormous improvement over what had been there. I wish Charlotte would get more development like that.

I wish you know who would get off her you know what and get started on whatever they're going to do at Park and Seven Eagles.

You're not the first person to leave the area and *think* about going back. We left 3 years ago (not natives).

2 months after we left we started talking about going back.

So now, the thinking about going back is over. Our moving truck departs for Charlotte in 2 weeks :-)

Seems folks are playing too many "Sim City" type games. It takes entrepreneurs with lots of money to add all the various components to a city. Not like you can demand that a city suddenly become all you wish it to be. Of course, if you are a very wealthy person and wish to create those things you think are missing here . . . then maybe your list has some meaning.

Dallas and Kansas City do have the items on your wish list, just to name two such places.

Most people can't choose where they wish to live, unless they can find a job/career there or they are independently wealthy. If you move to an area and find a huge list of things you lacking (and you believe those deficits will greatly affect your enjoyment of life, lol) you should look for another area to relocate to - as no city can transform overnight. Even with time, it takes many people pouring a lot of money into making those changes.
