Hi,

We have been looking all over North Carolina and started in South. However, South Carolina with the heat, alligators, etc have steered us back to NC.

Charlotte - is it family friendly? We are avid boaters, and although can not afford something right on Lake Norman, would prefer housing pretty close.

Is it a full time area/ part time? We are currently on a lake in PA 0- where it is mostly part timers - summer.

We also need to find a good school district.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!!!

lol, no offense, but alligators? You are dismissing the whole state of South Carolina because of alligators? Just FYI, both states probably have about the same size populations of them, BUT it is entirely possible to live here your whole life and never see one. I'd be more concerned about the bears!

As for the heat, there isn't a lot of differences in the weather in Charlotte either.

Lake Norman is a manmade lake. It is residental, not touristy, with limited access for folks who don't live on it. There is also limited swimming for the general public too. It is not a summer home only kind of place - people live there year round. It is extremely desirable to live there and homes can be some of the most expensive in the Charlotte area. You could look to live in the Troutman area, north of Charlotte, where homes would be more affordable closer to the lake.

You mention needing good schools, how about jobs?

There is also Mountain Island Lake. Depending on where you live, you could be zoned to some good public schools in the north Charlotte/huntersville area. You also would be near some great charter schools...if you can get in them!
There is Lake Wylie too...just over the boarder from NC to SC. I don't know much about this area accept that I have heard the SC school districs near the lake are good.

Loves Mountains and Taben,

Thanks quite a bit for the information, it is much appreciated.

We are avid swimmers and boaters and spend a lot of time in the water. One way to relieve that is to have a pool at home and just boat in the lake without swimming.

Thanks for the info on the charter schools and Lake Wylie as well.

Loves Mtns, job is not an issue.

Great about not needing to find a job

I would like to suggest you consider going further north to the foothills of NC and the town of Wilkesboro. Kerr Scott Lake may be more of what you are looking for, and in a better price range than the Lake Norman area

Here on Lake Norman, you can easily live in a lake access/pool community and have a deeded boatslip on a community dock that conveys with the property. That way you can have it all!! Great schools in Iredell, half the taxes than Mecklenburg...easy access to some newer Charter or private schools if you want to go that route....plus this gorgeous view pretty much on a nightly basis:

I'm a little partial, because I live and work here at the Lake...but unless someone gave me a really nice horse farm somewhere....I wouldn't live anywhere else.
