Can anyone tell me .....
if a phone line to an alarm system is cut, disconnected etc.....shouldn't
that send a signal to the company and they contact you?

They do not monitor phone lines. The phone company would not contact you if the line was cut, would they? I got the cell guard for mine because I do not have a landline and do not want to get one just for an alarm and pay that extra money every month.

my thought was if that connection wasn't present wouldn't it notify them (the alarm co)?

There's another thread here about this. The OP's phone line was cut, and he was paying monitoring for many months although the alarm company couldn't have been monitoring the line. The alarm company admitted that they're supposed to test every connected line monthly but for some reason they hadn't although they were still billing the OP.

So based on that, there's no signal sent if the line is disconnected, but the alarm company should be checking. I have no idea how accurate this is for you or anyone else.
