Don't play around with these people. You don't want Child Services and the Police at your door! lol Find an adult babysitter

Note sure if there is an age, per se. The neglect law allows social services to go after a parent if a child is not receiving proper care of supervision. This is highly subjective. Maturity of children varies, of course.
As public schools offer after school care for all elementary and some middle school students, I think it safe to assume that at 11 and under they should not be home alone. Once they are 12, it may well depend on your view of the child's maturity. I would not have anyone under 14 babysitting, but again...that is subjective.
In the end, if you are wondering whether or not someone should be home alone or watching another...they probably should not be.

I don't think there is a real law.

NC Department of Health & Human Services

The NCDHHS addresses the question but I think I would still call and ask as a county might have different ordinances.

Here is the list of states from the Latchkey website:

Are you asking because you need to leave your children home or you are concerned about a situation with someone else?

There is a law of common sense. It really depends on the situation, length of time, time of day, availability of adults (neighbors, etc), and most importantly - the child. Everyone has a different idea of what an appropriate age is - the Red Cross offers babysitting classes for 11 year olds. In our case, we allowed our kids to start babysitting at 12, but only during the day for older children on our block when we were home. We worked up from there.

It may sound great to say only 14 and up can babysit, but that is ignoring the fact that many 12 year olds (who are in 7th grade by the way) are mature enough to babysit just fine. It is also harder to get older babysitters due to the increased demand on their time.

My 11 y.o. is more independent and a better problem-solver than my 14 y.o. In my opinion it totally depends on the particular child and what their abililities are - both for staying home alone and for babysitting. That being said, I definitely think there should be SOME minimum age for leaving a child home alone since SOME parents will rationalize just about anything to meet their own needs. Not sure what it should be - CERTAINLY not under 10!!

If I had to find a baby sitter, which I have chosen not to bc I have family in FL to watch my 4 y.o if need be, the age for the sitter would be a minimum of 17 with high maturity. Thats obviously over the age necessary to stay home alone. I guesstimate as my daughter is only four, that by age 12 or 13 she could stay home alone. I know at 12 and 13 I was being dropped off to movies and the beach with friends with no parental eye. That being said, it was more like a "buddy system". Being home alone is solely based on a childs maturity and quick thinking if something went wrong. Additional assurance would be if you have a dog to deter a thief, and a child who knows all emergency numbers for all sorts of different scenarios.

Child services told my neighbor that there is no definitive age, that it's by the maturity of the child -- of course exercising common sense. Someone else said availability of adults and time of day. Those were mentioned as well.
