This will be my first 4th in Charlotte and I am shocked to hear about riots and fights downtown. I have been to quite a few parades/festivals/etc in uptown Charlotte and I haven't seen anything that made me feel unsafe. Some of these events served ALOT of alcohol, too. What makes the 4th so dangerous there?

It was unsupervised teens that were causing all the problems...i don't remember hearing about any problems last year though...does anyone know where in Uptown the shoot the fireworks off? Some friends of mine and I are staying at the Westin and are wondering where the best views might be for them.

I don't think it's particularly dangerous. One year, things did get out of control; there wasn't enough of a police presence and there were fights. If you don't live here, you can think: "Police presence? Why would I go somewhere that even needed that?!" But, having been there that night, it was one isolated area and one group of people, it's not like the whole downtown was rioting or anything.

I feel very safe there, and I've taken my boys for years with no incidents. We've watched from the top deck of Discovery Place; that was a good spot. They change where they shoot them from, so the good places change from year to year! You used to be able to see them from the CPCC parking deck. For several years, that was a great place, with lots of families of all colors, all the kids playing together, sharing sparklers. Then they moved the fireworks base! Now I don't know where you can go uptown.

Last year, we watched from just outside of Fuel Pizza on Central Avenue. Mostly a good spot (close to the Dairy Queen!), but we missed some of the lower ones because of the trees.

I remember years ago, going to the parking lot of Charlottetowne Cinemas (now the Target on Kings Dr.), being able to run around and have fun. Hmm... wonder if the top level of that deck might work?

I hope the paper publicizes good spots to watch from! One year, we went to Marshall Park, and ended up having to RUN a couple blocks to see them.

I would not let the unfortunate incidents of a few years ago keep you away!

I was actually sad to hear people saying that it might be dangerous in the city. I have never lived near a city as big as Charlotte. Any festival, fair, celebration in Charlotte is exciting for us. I love the idea of being in a city with big buildings then heading home (20 min) and being in the woods. We have had nothing but good time everytime we have been downtown. We've just had a blast the past few months! I've never been scared downtown or felt unsafe. But as a newbie I have to go off the opinions of others. It's sad but true that any place with numerous people can turn into a dangerous situation. I think we'll go to Charlotte for the 4th and celebrate our history!

Default Red White and Boom at the Crowne Plaza hotel

The Crowne Plaza Hotel has the radio station 96.1 the beat on their parking deck from 6pm through the fireworks show. Its a good view of the fireworks since it is near Memorial Stadium where they set off the fireworks. Bring chairs or a blanket and the hotel restaurant grills out hamburgers and hot dogs etc.
