I am married and have two elementary school age children. We are moving because my husbands mother is terminally ill and we want to spend as much time with her as possible. What does North Carlina have to offer to a young black family as far as culture and education? In Austin there is nothing!

Kiki,

I am from NJ and really considering the move to Charlotte. I have lived all over the country and even overseas. I see that your from TX even though I never lived in Austin,I have lived in San Antonio,Dallas, and Houston. Texas is a great state as a whole. I really enjoyed my time there. My fav cities were San Antonio and Dallas. I have been to Austin a few times and it was a great place to visit. Back to Charlotte....I have been there about 5 or 6 times and each time just got better and better. NC job market isn't that great but heck what state is? However TX as a whole has a better job market. Charlotte is a mini version of Atlanta. It's a Greattttttttttttttt place to live. It really is. Public school system needs some work but I hear its getting alot better. Cost of living is actually cheaper than TX. As far as culture there is plenty of culture there. What is not to love about Charlotte? Great nightlife, great restaurants,pro-sports teams, cost of living is great, nice friendly people, big city with a small town feel to it. Good luck. I think your going to love Charlotte. Oh and there are plenty of colleges around.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mother-in-law. I hope you and your family will get to spend some quality time together. I think you will find Charlotte a very welcoming city - no matter what your race.

Check out the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture (www.ganttcenter.org) - named for Charlotte's first African-American mayor who still lives in Charlotte and is a true gentleman.
