I thought I was the only one who saw this article this morning.
Interesting change of dates for kids.

Yes, I read that article today. My daughter will be 5 in July of 2009 so she will still make the cutoff. NOt great news for parents of children will turn 5 between Sept 1 and Oct. 16th although sometimes kids need that extra time for maturity reasons!

I just read the article and I couldnt disagree more with it. Here in NY the cutoff is Dec.31. If you are not 5 by then you can't start Kindergarten. I am not sure how it is that they have four year olds with 6 year olds. That makes no sense what so ever. At four we have pre-k. When my children went to pre-k it was a half day program where they did work, rexo sheets, learning to write their ABC's sounds basic math. I think this early start helped both of my children to excell and go into advanced programs. If done right Pre-k and K can be the best learning years of a childs life. This is when they want to learn. I think they need to take a closer look at starting Pre-k programs at 4 and then K classes at 5. Still trying to figure out how 6 yr olds are with 4 yr olds...shaking my head.....
Let me talk to the Governor...lol....

Actually while NC has an age to start school they do not have a starting point, although many kids do fall into kindergarten range. My dd is a tad younger than the cut off so she is really a grade ahead than a child her same age. They have an age of entry not a point of entry, so if you child is advanced and ready to handle a different grade level you can request it and also they can move them if they find they are ready to be in another grade level.

Momo, your contradicting yourself. If you think kids should start Kindregarten later (5 yrs old instead of 4yrs old), than u should agree with the change, as they are requiring starting students to be within one week of their fifth birthday starting 2009.

Sometimes I think they should have different rules for girls than for boys. I know that may not be popular, but after talking to many K teachers, there is a real difference in maturity levels between most girls and most boys.
