And its possible that they're all good, church-going young men.

It doesn't matter how they got there. There are examples of criminals using the LYNX to get to and fro just as there are examples of them using busses. The question is why are they there? What makes the LYNX system an easy or popular target? It could be one or more of many things. One of which is they know that law-abiding citizens are far less likely to be armed because they are afraid of breaking the law regarding concealed weapons. Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

The only reason I am unarmed in the Lynx lot is because Lynx prohibits carrying.

Yes, criminals are attracted to places they know people are unarmed.

Lynx has prohibited carrying but it is not a NC state law. Every system / city makes its own decision about carrying. I've spoken with the Lynx Dir of Security and researched the state law. Despite what a certain poster will tell you here, city ordinances do not apply statewide.

Seems to me if folks have a CCW license, who is gonna know what they have on their person? I have three friends that carry (licensed) and they are 3 of the most responsible folks I know. Two are former military. I like knowing they are armed!

As already mentioned, the problem is that law-abiding citizens follow the "rules" . . . and the thugs don't.

If there were scanners (even manual use of them by LE on folks entering and leaving stations) then no one would have weapons. Since that isn't feasible . . . seems to me law-abiding citizens are penalized for being law-abiding -- when thugs carry knives and guns with impugnity.

This is exactly the problem. Without getting into politics, the kind of no-carry laws make absolutely no sense seeing as the Supreme Court has ruled that the police aren't required to protect you (not the exact wording) and you can't legally carry on LYNX. Open season.

I propose a Stop The Violence rally. Some time in late August (so we have enough time to properly organize), we all gather at a predetermined LYNX station and just give the criminals our wallets and purses if they will promise to not hurt at any time in the future. I really think this could work.

I am lovin' it, Spanky. "Voluntary surrender of all valuable personal property in exchange for peace in the kingdom."

And then we could all have a big ole group hug.

That's just it, though. I'm yet to be convinced that Lynx is a popular target. In three years of operation, I've heard of this one robbery and one assault. I'm sure there have been more, but if there really was some sort of crime wave on the Lynx, wouldn't we have heard about it by now? Lnyx really isn't a popular target anymore than other places where unobservant/distracted people are in enclosed spaces or spaces with low visibility (parking garages, parking lots,). Absolutely we should up the security on and around the Lynx. My problem is people who hear of one incident or another and try to use that as an argument for shutting down/not expanding the system.

I was one of the ones adamant about the Lynx not bringing a "criminal element" to Carolina Pavilion. I was adamant because the statistics did not back up the claim. The numbers I looked at actually showed that crime surrounding the area had dropped. Carolina Pavilion has had issues with crime since the late 90s and is much improved visually since then.

I'll rephrase my statement. Just because we don't hear the local news station tell us there are criminals riding LYNX, doesn't mean its not happening. How many crimes go unreported each day? Week? Year? Better yet, if the local news stations reported all cimes, we'd be too damn scared to leave the house without a Howitzer and fighter jet for backup.

OK, I overdid it a little, but the point is just because its not reported doesn't mean its not happening. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean its not happening. And, of course, Joe Dirtbag isn't going to be carrying his freshly-pilfered plasma TV on the light rail either. He might be a criminal, but he isn't totally brain-dead. (Hyphens-are-fun)
