Thought this info might be helpful to some people, as I wondered what this would cost before I did it!
I transferred tags for a 2002 minivan, a 2000 pickup truck, and a 2006 trailer. The cost was $522 (includes registration and a highway use tax) plus an additional $17 for notary fees. Then, I took one of the cars across the street for the emissions & safety inspection, which was another $30. These fees are NOT part of the property taxes which we will have to pay when we receive a bill in 1 - 2 months. I believe that will be 3% of the value of the vehicles each year, so if you have 2 cars that are worth $10,000 each, that would be $600/year - yikes! You can do the math if your cars are worth more.
We were in the auto tag place for an 1 hour and 15 minutes, and I did not think the line was long when we went in (maybe about 10 - 15 people in front of us). The emission/safety inspection took 30 minutes.
You need to bring your car titles, proof of insurance, proof of your address, and your driver's license (but it doesn't have to be a NC one). Don't forget the checkbook! You will leave with a new plate, but you will get the new title in 2 - 3 weeks. Oh, and NC doesn't recognize the word "or" on a title. If the title says you "or" your spouse, you will both need to be present to sign or else you have to download an MVR form from the website & have it signed and notarized by your spouse who does not accompany you to the title office.

The motor vehicle property tax is locally based. Each one of NC's 100 counties set their own rates instead of 3% of the vehicle's value. Some counties are high and some are low. If you live within the city limits of a recognized municipality, they will also tax your vehicle.
Example - In my location, I would pay 0.515 per $100 of value. On a vehicle value of 10K, my annual vehicle property tax would be $51.50.
The guy who did the inspection told me they were trying to pass a law that will require people who live in SC and work in Charlotte to have their car inspected.
I just got the property tax bills for both of our cars and they are both worth over 10K each. On one car the taxable value is $20,900 and the bill is $153.97. The other car was valued at $16,650 and that bill was $122.66. So it's approximately $280/yr. for both cars. This will go down each year.
What it cost me to register and get tags for my 2001 Buick Century, pay the property tax on in SC (address is unincorp. part of Fort Mill): today

No inspection or emission in SC.
How much of this was for the plate and how much of it was for the personal property tax? What did you have to have on hand in order to get your plate?
Do you have to show proof that you have turned in your other plates (from another state?)
I'm trying to figure out how to do this without getting stuck with NO plates on my car for a week.
To cancel car insurance in NC, you have to send them a copy from the DMV that you turned in your NC plates. I confirmed this yesterday on the phone with the insurance company and the DMV both.
So ....I would assume it would behoove one to buy their SC plates first right?
Can you buy your SC plates while you still have a NC drivers license and an NC auto insurance policy? I will switch policies and get my drivers license when I can but I just don't have the time to move and get all this rigamaroll done these two states of NC and SC put one thru with only 4 days of vacation left.
