I don't know.

It seems logical that the only way they can match up things at the county tax office is if someone has reported you as owning property here and being a fulltime resident and having vehicles registered in another state.

I have just been told they can do it - not sure how, tho.

Angry Take the time to register

I speak from experience when I tell you this, if you are moving to N.C. you should take care of your registration and new plates ASAP. I moved to Asheville N.C. from Florida and wasn't able to afford the process right away. I was pulled over four times in a one year period because of my Florida tags (profiling). They do not take kindly to people from out of state there. I spend more time in court and paying tickets than I would have just making the switch. So I finally conceded, got legal - then moved to Virginia
Trust me, get your affairs in order if you're going to own a car while living there...

That's amazing, someone must have had it out for you. I worked in Asheville for a year, with FL plates on my car. Just about every 3rd car I saw had FL plates. Sometimes, if I didn't look around too much I felt like I was home bacause of all of the FL plates. I noticed the NC plates as being out of place. LOL Like I said, my husband was stopped with NC driver's and FL plates and nothing was even said about it.

That's cause you are in the CLT area and the other poster was in the A'ville area.

Trust me on this.

I know this isn't too current a thread.. but I would recommend doing everything as soon as you can. They will give you about 90 days, but then just do it. The insurance is cheaper, but you do pay a transfer fee, but it is one time. The property tax is annual, but your renewal of tags is quite cheap, it seems to even out what you pay the state, they just call it a tax here versus expensive tags. I remember in AZ paying $200 for tags, which drove me nutz and $50 emissions after 2 years, now its 5. So here we pay $30 for inspection (look for coupons people!), $20 tags and a % for taxes, which I think it 1%?

Also as others have said, two licenses is illegal.

Watch around schools, they will pull you over looking for illegal immigrants and current registrations. If you have kids in school they know you are a resident. I actually got pulled over (well it was a check point) pulling off 77 last month going to work in uptown. They basically asked for DL, INsu and went and checked my tags then sent me on my way.

No, I lived in Rutherfordton and worked in Asheville for a year. I am in Charlotte now.
