I had a motorcycle for 3 months, then sold it, and I am just now getting a 2010 vehicle tax bill. I thought that's what I paid when it was $150 to register the bike, but now I'm getting another bill for $143, but I've long since sold the bike.

Should I just throw the statement away?

That's a good question..... I don't think I did, I think the line at the DMV was out the door everytime I tried, and now it's probably in my file cabinet somewhere

There should be directions on there for if you've sold a vehicle; it should say something about sending in the copy of the bill of sale and the statement from the tag office you got when you turned in your tag and they'll send you a pro-rated bill.

What happens if you just don't respond and never renew the registration?

My friend keeps telling me that you're simply not allowed to register that vehicle, and that it wouldn't affect your DL. Is he mistaken?

Seriously, just pay the bill and be done with it. You owned the vehicle for part of the year, you owe part of the year's vehicle tax. It sucks, but such is life. It will catch up to you, one way or another.

I just moved out of North Carolina and what you need to do is return the plate to the NC Motor Vehicle in Raleigh and request form FS-20 (as receipt). You then turn the FS-20 form to the Vehicle Tax Office in Charlotte and they will reimburse you or stop sending you the bill.
