When I lived in NJ, I used to vacation in the Outer Banks an always took the coastal route I'll call it. Depending on what part of Jersey you are from, you could take the GSP to the Cape May Ferry to Lewes, DE. From Delaware I believe it's Rt 1 for a short time to Rt. 9 > Rt.113 through to the Demarva Peninsula > Rt. 13 to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel...you may to check or Google Map this route. Generally it took around 7 - 8 hours to the OB.

Good Luck on your trip...

I totally agree I495 was a nightmare until we could get on I66. But honestly, for me, it was worth it just to get off of the wall to wall people on I95. And I didn't do it at night so I didn't find 211 anything but pleasant. I completely DETEST I95! But we can agree to disagree - no worries mate
I did this route (without the 211 section) on my last couple of trips to Toms River, NJ. It seems to go faster than the I81 to I77 route. Driving through VA via 81 seems to take forever, so the I66 route breaks up the trip. Both ways beat the I95 to I85. That to me was really boring. Did this usually on Sunday mornings so traffic was light.
