We drove around downtown about 1030p and the city looked pretty safe. There are police men on bikes and there are cop cars on almost every block and I did not see anything too scary like you see in some big cities.

As we were driving out of the city there was one area that was little scary. It was poorly lit and the buildings looked abandoned etc. We would like to go downtown on Friday night and check out the scene. Are there any blocks/ streets we should stay away from? We just want to know what the locals know about downtown so we can be safe.

Thank you!

Almost everything inside the 277 loop seems pretty safe to me. The closer you stay to Trade and Tryon the better/safer, though.

Compared to other big city downtowns, uptown Charlotte is fairly safe. HOWEVER, it would not be a good idea to walk anywhere alone, as you are just making yourself too vulnerable that way and there are some shady areas near the fringes of uptown.

As Hooligan said, stick closest to the center of uptown (the intersection of Trade and Tryon) and you'll be among a lot of people and be pretty safe

Don't go north of 9th street. Don't go south of 3rd maybe. Stay within a few blocks of Tryon Street going east or west.

Walking by yourself uptown is absolutely fine during the day or early night; or most hours of the night really. Basically, city rules apply: stay on well-lit streets and with other people and you will be fine.

North of ninth (maybe 11th) is definitely shady and to avoid. (Although the Music Factory is a nice venue up there well worth the trek

South of 3rd is absolutely fine if a little slow after dark...But there is the Convention Center at Stonewall which keeps activity going on as well as the new theater and museum complex. There is also a lot of residential propety on Morehead and in Dilworth, so be a little careful walking around there because it can be dark but that's mainly OK

Tryon South of the 277 bridge (SouthEnd area) can be a bit shady because it is poorly lit.

The West side of uptown can be hit or miss. Best there to stay on Graham or Trade -- one of the busier streets, although there are many nice places on the side streets there.
