Under $175K in Charlotte
OK, I've asked similar questions in the past, but this is a little more general... I'm in the process of relocating here.
Are there many options for nice areas to live in - houses, not condos - around the city for 175K and under?
I know you can buy a glorified closet (400 sq. ft. condo) uptown for $175. In the future there will be other condos in Plaza Midwood and Noda...
Are there any options for townhomes or homes, at least 1,000 sq. ft. around town, or are people stuck living outside the area - exit 16 and higher on 77?
I found some nice areas off of exit 18, but I'd love to be closer.
I work on the north side of the city, off Graham. I often have to work at night for different events. I really can't handle a long commute....traffic to exit 23 is sometimes an hour or more.
I'd love to be as close to town as possible, but wonder if this is at all possible. I know nice neighborhoods like Dilworth are out of the question, but maybe there are other areas or neighborhoods I should look at?
I'm new to the area, so I'm still learning where the good, the bad and, well, the ugly are...
Thanks to everyone who can give advice on this... I'd love to buy something around town, but it seems like prices have shot up in all the good areas.

If you don't mind a commute, look into the steele creek area.
You should be able to find a house in the University area. That would be very convienent, since you work off Graham St. There are a lot of single family houses and townhomes in that area.

I know my cousin just sold his condo right beside Southpark (you can here Pops in the Park from their patio). They sold it for around 150k at ~1200 sqft. So while rare, they're still there! Try East Blvd., Park Road, Kennelworth, Dilworth , Southend, NoDa, 7th St., and Pecan Ave.

Your options in that price range are in certain areas of the city, unfortunately not all. One of your best bets for the shortest commute is to look at neighborhoods in that section bordered by Eastfield Road and Statesville Rd right at the city limits in north Mecklenburg. Here is one MLS number I found as an example: Charlotte NC Homes For Sale, Houses for sale, houses, real estate, for sale - helenadamsrealty.com
Best of luck in your search.

I understand your frustration but a little history about this state I have lived or hung out in about all parts of this state so I kinda know where this all began.
Before Suburban life really kick in it was really unheard of commuting from one city to another. If you lived in durham you hung out and dated people in durham going to raleigh was kinda ordeal due to most everything you need was within 15 minutes. This is why you will hear more from locals complaining about traffic in todays time. While those from other places think what traffic. Some cities got a bad rap and you just didnt hang out with those from that area or least not go there unless you had to.
You made very valid point about people making prejudgemental statements about an area and havent been there in 5 to 10 years and do not know how the area has progress. I try not let it get to me but think this helps make this area a good kept secret. If people are shun from the area then it means less traffic hopefully less crowded schools etc.
I love the Parkwood community in Durham beautiful establish neighborhood close to the mall and Jordan Lake and Chapel Hill.
It been a history of this state the triangle isnt alone here a thread I did showing the other areas in the state that have their own black sheep
What is with all the black sheep?

Unfortunately there are no neighborhoods in that price range closer to where you work that would be safe.
