I do this trip at least once a year (but further south than Orlando). We like to make pit stops in St. Augustine, Jacksonville, Savannah, and sometimes even Charleston. We've also stopped in Amelia Island for the night, which is gorgeous.
However, for your purposes, I'm going to go with the group and say Savannah. There is a shockingly good Thai place (Ruan Thai 17 West Broughton Street) there (I know, it seems crazy to go to Savannah for Thai food, but it is really that good).

Well if Atlanta is out of the Question then I would recommend St. Augustine or Amelia Island as well. I have great memories of going to both places when I was a kid, I was probably around 8 or 9. St. Augustine has a neat little fort that is cool for the kids to explore. I actually went again for the first time since I was a kid just last December, and was still great place to visit. Its a good way to sneak in a little education
you can pop just 45 minutes north to Beaufort, SC and tour the area. It is beautiful, and yes, the oldest town in America. The tour will not take more than an hour or so and then you can lunch on the waterfront before getting on the hwy home.

Isn't St. Augustine, Florida the oldest town in the US??

Sure is. And if Beaufort's official website is correct, they're not even anywhere close to being the oldest. It wasn't founded until 1711. I think Charleston is older then that, so they're not even oldest in South Carolina...

That's what I was taught. I checked the St Augustine website. 1565 beats the rest, hands down.
