My husband and I are heading to Ohio for Thanksgiving for the first time in over a decade. I was wondering what traffic will be like on 77. Is there more traffic going north, or south, or both equal? Is the majority of it over once you get out of Charlotte? We are planning to leave Wednesday morning around 8:00.

Thanks - any information or advice is welcome!

You'll probably have less traffic than if you headed out at 1pm.

Thanks, Barking. Do you think most people will leave later that day? That's what we are hoping.

8:00 a.m. is great - you'll get ahead of the rush. As the day goes on it will get heavier and heavier.

The worst thing will be Sunday evening coming home though! I do not envy anyone on the road then.

Please be careful just over the NC/Virginia border, especially if the weather is iffy. The Fancy Gap area is where you gain some extreme elevation and can get socked in with fog.

Just two days ago fog and rained contributed to a 50 car pile up in which 16 people were seriously injured and several died

We are coming back on Saturday for that very reason! I'm a careful driver, but a really uncomfortable and paranoid passenger, so I'm trying not to be nervous about all of the traffic. I'll definitely watch out in the mountains. Thanks!

we go to NE Ohio every Thanksgiving & Christmas. We have always got on road in the afternoon on Wednesday and usually end up adding a minimum of an hour due to Charlotte traffic. I think the later you leave in the afternoon the worse the traffic. It seems to be stop and go through north of Charlotte. This year we will leave by 8am and I anticipate a better situation. If you return on Sunday you can bet that you hit traffic once enter NC. We have hit volume just south of Wytheville...it is the worst. You either got to plan to hit that area by early afternoon (morning is better) or delay your trip to following day. The last few years we have decided to either drive half way to Charleston, WV and finish drive on Monday through VA & NC. In past years we have added up to 2 hours to our drive home due to traffic volume. Fortunately we will go to Panthers/Browns game Sunday so it works well for us to drive home Monday. I would expect the drive from OH the Sunday after Xmas (26th) would be a day to avoid as well.

Fantastic, ZnGuy. So there's more traffic going north on the way out before the holiday, and south on the way back? That's what we anticipated. It's also why we will come home on Saturday and not Sunday.

Thanks all, this has been helpful! If anyone else has info, let me know.

There may be some traffic at the I81/77 split as well. It may be smooth sailing, but we did get caught in about a 12 mile back up a couple of years ago. Safe travels!

We are moving back to VA over Thanksgiving leaving to drive up on Saturday. We are hoping there isn't alot of traffic and hoping that Fancy Gap isn't foggy. Been there and done that.

We've had the best luck going back to Ohio by starting out really early, or waiting until after morning rush hour. By really early I mean hitting the road about 3-4am. If you head out that early, you see a little traffic just north of Charlotte, then it is clear the rest of the way up because your timing for the other major cities / junctions misses rush hours. 77 is not a bad drive, but (like others have said) be very careful as you cross over to VA. Not only will you encounter HEAVY fog, but you will also see DEER very close to the road, and there is a high deer vs car accident ratio through both Virginias. Once you're in OH, it is smooth sailing again. They were doing construction on 77 between Akron and Cleveland as of this summer (major bridge replacement), and we avoided that by taking Rt 8 north to the turnpike. It usually takes us about 8hrs to get from Charlotte to Cleveland, Marietta is about the 5hr mark.

Oh, and if you're coffee drinkers and like the McCafe coffees... you can skip over Marietta's McD's! I have yet to pass through there over the past year and get a decent Mocha!

Yes. I only know this because I made the mistake of leaving at 12:30pm a couple years ago to go to The Point to see a client & it took over 2 hours to get up there.
