I am starting this thread because yes, I am furious, but also if others have gotten this letter and it is in fact a phishing scam then it is important to alert others. I will try to make it as short as possible.

Wife got a letter today, return address was "Compliance Processing and Monitoring" PO Box in Phoenix AZ (Bank of America was not in the return address) envelope also had "IMPORTANT ACCOUNT INFORMATION" printed on it.

Inside are 3 sheets of paper, on black and white (no color logo) Bank of America stationery. Wife's printed name and address, no account number information (not even "account number ending in..") just a form letter, "Dear Valued Bank of America Customer"

long letter basically saying they need her social security number and if the information is not received within 30 days of the post mark date of this letter they will close our account! (No postmark, but letter says, PRINTED DATE: November 2, 1010) Today is November 18, so am I supposed to panic and dash off my SS# to them?

THIS MUST BE A SCAM RIGHT? We opened this account 2.5 years ago. They can't be this stupid can they??

The reverse side of this letter is written in Spanish. I don't understand Spanish, so don't send me crap in Spanish!!

They also included an IRS W-9 form. I am familiar with this form, but if they expect us to fill in our SS# and send it off to a PO Box in Phoenix AZ they must be smoking crack!!! They included a return envelope that was addressed to COMPLIANCE PROCESSING AND MONITORING AZ1-200-20-13 PO BOX 29961 PHOENIX AZ 85038-0961
Again, no "Bank of America" in the address.

I actually think it is legit... but not sure, because a) it is just so stupid on their part in this day and age of identity theft to ask for this information in this fashion and, b) threaten me with account closure if they don't get it in 30 days ???? I am livid, as if you can't tell! The only identifying information on the letter was wife's name and address which of course is public information.

I guess we will ask at the branch tomorrow. I would submit a W-9 to the branch but not mail it off to a po box. Every second of time I spend on this make me more angry.

Why are you furious? Just don't send it in. Call BofA now and ask them about it.

But not so stupid as to forget the Social Security number you must have given them to open the account. It has to be a scammer.

This is a fake mailing. Don't send in your social security number for Pete's sake. Call up the bank to report this b/c they should know someone is sending this out.

Bank of America is stupid for a multitude of reasons, none of them related to an obvious scam like this.

You're questioning, is BOA that stupid, or do they think your're that stupid? If that's the question I have the answer.

If you don't call the bank at least bring the letter to a branch office.

Maybe Chris Hansen will stake out the PO box and catch the scammer on video.

There is absolutely no question that it is a phishing scam. But it's a good idea to let Bank of America see this letter, because I believe they will see that it gets investigated and hopefully the scammer gets caught.
