I am one of those who are "strongly encouraged to donate" by my employer- and I don't understand why they practically force people to donate to a charity they may not believe in. I don't come to you making you buy my kids girl scout cookies!

Gloria King aside, the United Way is a worthy organization. They have a great presence in Charlotte, have really taken steps to limit their administrative footprint and provide funds for many great charities.

For folks that feel passionately about individual causes then certainly direct donations are a great solution. For individuals who want to make charitable contributions that provide a real benefit in their community but don't have the time for researching and vetting local causes the UW is an *excellent* option. Due to their size and resources they are able to do things that small charities can't, and whether or not you will believe it economies of scale play a significant factor in their ability to provide excellent value.

It's easy to be swept into an emotional reaction as an excuse to give nothing. But I'd urge everyone to consider making contributions to charitable causes... however they see fit.

I don't know where this number come from? My understanding is that she makes less than $150,000... which is less than one third of King's former annual compensation.

Just trying to keep the discussion rooted in facts.

I have stuck by the United Way in the past. There was a different "scandal" a few years back, but still, I stuck with them because I think an "umbrella" agency is a good thing for the community. However, this latest action is the last straw for me. I will never donate to them again. They have totally lost my trust. Unless there is something else they are trying to cover up, I don't see how Gloria Pace King had a chance in court. She was fired with cause for lying on her expense account and misusing funds. Charlotte really seems to have "something rotten" amongst its nonprofit and community services ranks recently. Open Door, DSS, United Way -- there seem to be no ethics anymore.

Between this:

[LEFT]The payment, for a supplemental executive retirement plan, brought her total compensation that year to $1.2 million. Such plans are common in for-profit businesses.
And that I've read somewhere (I think) that the new director makes about half of what Gloria did, that would be $600K.

I'm just sick of hearing the race card being played again. Somehow she struggled along as a black woman for 14 years, now suddenly she's being discriminated against?

She had Bill Diehl as her lawyer. He's big bucks.

Not true. She was let go because of the public outcry about her compensation package and that's it. By all accounts she did a very good job.

I encourage everyone to read some articles about the issue... facts in this case are easy to find.

I'm sure Ms. King will be donating a sizeable portion of her settlement to charity. She's obviously a caring person.

I disagree with people's comments about Ms King.

She was fired because of public backlash to the amount of money she was being paid. It looked "bad" that the board approved paying her so much so they fired her. Then, the smear campaign began against her.

I agree that it is a lot of money, I agree that her salary was shocking, but the United Way board agreed to pay her that much and apparenty she did a good job for them. They were overwhelmingly happy about her before the public found out and they had to deal with public uproar.

To me, that's also unfair.
