Hi, I'm a 27 year old San Francisco girl, and I will be visiting Charlotte for work next week from Thursday to Sunday! I want to really experience the area since I've spent no time in North Carolina outside of the Smoky Mountains. I'm staying at a hotel in Uptown, but I'll have a rental car with me so I can travel throughout the area easily. I'm mainly looking for things to do within 1 hour or so of Uptown, and I'll pretty much have Friday afternoon through Sunday evening free to explore the area.

I've read through a bunch of other Charlotte threads and looked through the Charlotte Travel & Tourism website, and so far I've come up with the NASCAR Hall of Fame and the Bechtler Museum as things to see. I'm not in any way religious, but I may check out the Billy Graham Library if I have time at the end of my trip. Aside from the typical things found in every single city in the US (shopping malls/amusement parks/Christmas displays), is there anything else that is interesting or unique in Charlotte to do or see?

Also, I'm REALLY excited to try some Carolina BBQ. What are some good restaurants that serve great BBQ? Any other local specialties worth tasting?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions! I'm excited to see Charlotte, it seems like a very nice city and I know North Carolina is a very beautiful state. I'm really looking forward to my trip!

If you want some good BBQ, I would say Mac's Speed Shop, there are two location. One in Cornelius and one on South Blvd. I love the BBQ there.

The US National Whitewater Center is pretty unique. Especially if you like 'outdoorsy' activities. You can rent a mountain bike, do some climbing or brave the white water if you're feeling sporting...

I second the vote for McCadenville. It is a "Christmas display" but pretty unique in that the entire town is decorated.

If you go to the Bechtler museum - and it is a very nice museum - also go to the new Mint Museum which is right next door. As a San Francisco girl, you might enjoy and appreciate the irony of viewing some of the finer works from the Bank of America art collection. (I don't know the history of these art works, whether they were purchased by B of A when San Franciso was the headquarters or later.. hmm.. do you work for BofA ? )

I don't think the Whitewater center is going to do much for you... especially if it is freezing cold.

Why do you hate Steele Creek?

Kidding of course, but I must point out that there are THREE locations. The one you've omitted is on Sandy Porter Rd in the Steele Creek area of Charlotte.

Mac's locations

Believe it or not, not everyone sits around on their duff all winter.

I rode my mountain bike out there yesterday, and it was as fun as it always is.

Right on. We hike out there all the time, and my husband rides his mountain bike there a few times a month. There are always people there and things to see and do.
