We drove around the area quite a bit during the day and night and it seemed quiet and fine. I just wanted to make sure our impressions were not mistaken. Would you not recommend renting there? I am concerned because my wife will be living there by herself for the first couple of months, until I can join her and I want to make sure she is safe.
Do you have any other suggestions for something between Southpark and Ballantyne or any other neighborhoods in short driving distance to Uptown and safe at the same time?

Yorkmont is "ok". It is situated between S. Tryon and the Business Park area of Tyvola. The areas surrounding yorkmont aren't exactly what I'd call "top real estate". There is a bit of poverty in the area (i'm not sure of the crime right there, but where I work it is pretty bad. I'm pretty familiar with the area as I work only a quarter of a mile away.). I, myself, wouldn't feel very comfortable letting my wife stay by herself if that helps at all. Of course it's all a matter of opinion and others may have better info than me.

How long of a drive is it from Steele Creek to Uptown in rush hour traffic? Any good apartments in that area you can recommend?

From the 485 exit on S. Tryon, 30-35 minutes. We looked at Whitehall estates, didn't take it, but loved the apartments

Stay away from Reamont Rd, Archdale, Arrowood, and Nations Ford Rd. There are some really ruff neighborhoods over there. Other than that most of southwest is nice, parts of it even country with a small town feel.

I love the Southwest side of Charlotte. I live in the Ayrsley area and I think its great. Check out Gramercy Square at Ayrsley. There is a courtesy officer that lives on site and the buildings are access controlled. So not everyone can just walk in as they please. I love it!

Sometimes I have to commute to uptown for work...I can get to the College Street Office in 30 minutes (or less) and I leave at 8AM. I just take S. Tryon the whole way there. Its not too bad! Personally, I think the traffic is better on this side than in South Park. I used to live in the South Park area and I HATED it. You have no quick access to the highway and you have to go through a MILLION stop lights. It drove me bananas.

From my neighborhood it takes about 20-30 mins on backroads, not the freeway. The apartments someone else mentioned at Ayrsley are very nice, and there are also some other good complexes in the area. LovesMountains knows them better than most, so if she doesn't come back on this thread you might want to send her a pm.

If you are looking in that area near the airport keep in mind you will be hearing planes all the time.
I rented in Steele Creek for a year and really liked it.
