While everyone likes to have bank in the neighborhood, there are a lot of banks on the internet that offer free cking, higher interest etc ... the only drawback is deposits (unless direct deposit) have to be mailed.
I wouldnt feel safe & secure mailing cash & checks to a online only bank cause they could get lost or be stolen.
I dont mind depositing cash/checks into the atm. I have used the atm the majority of the time.
Not sure if this has been mentioned, but North Carolina Bank & Trust's Mad Money checking account pays 4.25% interest on balances up to $25k and you can have have 2 accounts (to earn the 4.25% on $50k.) It only requires $50 to open, and there are no monthly fees. Im not sure about overdraft charges because Ive never had one, though. I have no complaints with the bank, and the tellers are friendly.
Just noticed somebody bumped this thread from '07. Oh well, the info's still relevant.
I have free credit, checking, and savings accounts with Wachovia/Wells Fargo. I got it when I was a student. I'm not sure if it will still all be free if they ever find out I've graduated, so I try to keep a low profile while I'm in there, haha!
The plus side to Wells Fargo is their free iPhone app. I can view all account balances/transactions and makes transfers between any of my accounts with incredible ease. It's pretty freaking awesome.
Credit Unions are the only way to go for fee-less low cost banking. They arenot paying out huge bankster bonuses nor having to give returns to Wall Street.
Everyone in Mecklenburg is elegible to join the Charlotte Metro Credit Union. If you work for anything having to do with the state, there is the State Employees Credit Union. Most of the major employers have Credit Unions associated with them as well.
Don't fall for the "freebies" at the TBTF banks.
