Well we haven't been here long but we'd like to get married & have a small informal ceremony. Outdoors is fine. We aren't really religious. Any free or cheap setting that is Capital-L Lovely would be wonderful. Any local parks or anything? We don't know the area too well at all. Outside of Charlotte is fine too, just nothing more than an hour drive or so.

Just Google St. Mary's Chapel which is in downtown Charlotte. I got married there and it was $250 to rent the chapel. Since your not really religious the chapel is not associated with any religion and it sits in a beautifully landscaped Park like setting. I had my reception at the Crown Uptown Plaza hotel which is on McDowell Street only 2 blocks from the Chapel. The hotel charges ZERO to rent the banquet rooms there. That is a good deal for it being a hotel located downtown. Congrats on your wedding!

I just saw a beautiful wedding and reception at Jetton infront of the lake. Really nice. They decorated the tables and had a band for the reception. I would have loved to have mine there!

You can get a friend to become legally ordained through one Church and it's recognized in most states. Can't remember the name of it though.

I highly recommend renting the Gazebo at The Battery (White Point Garden) in Charleston, SC (about 3 hrs from Charlotte). Perfect for a small ceremony outside. You can stay in one of the many Bed&Breakfasts that line the edges of the park. You can have a horse and carriage carry you off when you are done for a reception/dinner at on the great Charleston restaurants.

If you've never been there, this is right at the bottom of the historic section where the Ashley and Cooper Rivers meet to form the Atlantic Ocean (as they say). Beautiful place.

Try a church those probably be your best bet.
For instance the one I go to is in Dilworth and it has a big chapel and a small chapel to use if you want to make a small wedding appear larger. The main chapel has optional sound system and oodles of rooms behind the pulpit for changing for the brides and bridesmaids. Also has a very large fully equipped fellowship hall in case you need a place for the reception and rooms in their for the groom's men to gather if needed.
Good luck
