an additional ~$40K a year per location. I takes a lot of gas sales to make that up, just to service few cash buyers.

Monday night (1/10) there was a large fire at the B.J.'s on Independence. Makes a person say 'hmmm'.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw it on news. Will this be arson or electrical oops Either way a insurance company IMO will end with property. Now Charlotte will have a burnt box store littering its landscape for months.

That is going to be an additional eye sore on top of the other shuttered buildings, let alone a massive mall off that road thats sitting there abandon.

They might as well bulldoze the property now. Another empty big box on Independence was likely to sit vacant for a long while, but a fire-damaged big box is just blight.

Just how bad was the fire? Was the building and / or merchandise badly damaged?

Independence is such an eyesore. It is a shame. I think it is just too long to support so much retail, plus, the traffic makes it difficult to navigate. There are some restaurants around there that I've long been curious about but have never attempted to go to because it seems like it is more hassle than it's worth. Aside from having to go to my dealership, I avoid it at all costs.
I wonder what could be done to salvage the area without costing gazillions of dollars, but I don't think Clt has the population to support much more than it already has. Maybe the NASCAR hall of fame shoulda been built there!

Elevated rail with park-n-ride lots at the major intersections. Build a multi-rail system so that you can have express trains to certain stops, unlike South Blvd. Put neighborhood retail, condos and rentals at the non park-and-ride stops. Finally build the freeway out to 485.

There are enough empty car dealers, empty strip malls, and open lots that they could do it without disrupting businesses that are doing well out there.

Ex-LI, I think you need a job in civil engineering for CLT! I like it!

Independence is not a very desirable area so new desirable retailers are not going to set up there. It's a catch-22. I think Independence is becoming the Southside's equivalent of Freedom Dr.
