Lowe's Cos, the nation's No. 2 home-improvement chain, is laying off about 1,700 middle managers nationwide and adding thousands of hourly, part-time sales staff on weekends.
Spokeswoman Chris Ahearn said Tuesday that the company redefined hundreds of middle-management jobs and will eliminate those between assistant store manager and store manager on Saturday.
The company will start taking applications next week to fill the 8,000 to 10,000 new positions, to be spread evenly among Lowe's 1,725 stores. Ahearn said the changes will give the company the staff in needs to help its customers when they shop the most weekends.
About 20 percent of stores will not lose staff. Lowe's has about 238,000 employees, with four to six managers at each store.
Ahearn declined further comment, citing Lowe's upcoming earnings report.

laying off 1700 but hiring 8000-10,000, that doesn't add up....
Sure it does. Business trends determine that they would be better served at this time with additional part time help and an hourly workforce. Some store managers make close to six figures, some exceed that. Re-org happens all the time and is sometimes a way to 'take out the trash'. In other words get out mangaers not being effective, give the ones that are excelling more growth opportunity.
8000 part time employees making 7-8, even 10 an hour are absorbed very quickly into the elimination of several 60K plus jobs.
I disagree. It takes a tremendous amount of money to hire, train and retain employees. And while some trimming the fat may be necessary, getting rid of 1700 middle managers and replacing them with part time employees reeks of more corporate greed. Simply lowes doesn't want to pay the bennies, retirement etc. that is required. With this plan they will save little for a few years but long term they won't have to pay the bennies.

Greed is good and it seems LEGAL in our society. The bennies alone total nearly $7million a year. a few part timers working 3-5 hour shifts, maybe 6 hours at a competative wage for the area will BOOST the dividends of the company and the CEO's bonus...CEO will probably gert 10%-15% of the savings...
I remember when Home Depot did the same, and hired a bunch of kids in place of the veteran employees making $12-$14 per hour...suddenly no one in the departments knew ANYTHING about the products or the vocational area....
Shop with our dollars...that is the only influence the retailers understand..

Greed is never good....but you sure are right, shop with our dollars......that is what we do.
Public companies are created to make money. That money goes to the management, employee's, and the investors. If a company can reduce what they perceive as bloat to help the bottom line then they will do it. I see nothing wrong with it. As a consumer you can always talk with your money and shop somewhere else.

That is a very large part of the downfall and sad state of this Nation.
I am not seeing the issue here. Yes, I do feel bad for the people getting laid off, but, I am also against too much middle management and micro managing people. When I go to Lowe's and im looking for an item, im looking for someone on the floor to assist. If more people will be on the floor to help me, that means I will probably be willing to go back there again and again if I can get help quickly.
As far as "re-training", I would hope they hire people for each department who already have a skill. If Joe Blow applies, and he has a plumbing background, will they need to re-train him in plumbing? No, but Joe will need to learn how the company works and such, which should take too long and probably isnt rocket science.
As a previous posted said, some of the management could be making 6 figures. You can easily get 4 part time and 2 full time employees from that. I would rather see Joe Blow the plumber who has been laid off for 9 months have a job at Lowe's and a chance for more people like him to have employment.
The bottomline is, the customers come into the store looking for something, and having managers sitting in an office or "overseeing" a few people on the floor isnt going to help the customer. Adding sales people and employees that can help the customer quicker will be noticed.
I believe the new Lowe's in Fort Mill has this same approach. I find theres a lot of floor staff and plenty of people to help you. Thats why I go back there anytime I need a product they would sell, im always welcomed, im always helped and treated well.

Well, unfortunately, that's capitalization in a nutshell. It literally is every man for themselves, some people try to do it ethically, and some don't. People cry about corporations raiding us for every last penny, and then scream Socialist! Marxist! ect at our president for trying to do something about it.
