CMS has plans to soon eliminate custodians who work for the school system and hire "contract workers" .This will save money because they will not offer any job benefits (sick leave.vacation time, insurance etc). I wonder if the background checks will continue for these "new workers"and our schools not have to deal with potential criminals now walking the school halls. Oh well at least they are saving money...

Typically the jobs are offered to the current custodians working in the schools today. This is a common cost saving move in tough times, but why would you assume that this will mean perverts and pedophiles will be stalking the halls of the schools. Yea, it sucks, but the reality is schools have to do what they can to save every buck they can. Your reaction seems to have the sole purpose of creating irrational fear.

So contracted cleaning companies don't use background checks? Even if required as part of the RFP CMS issues? And wouldn't they be able to come in after hours after the students have left? Just sayin'...

From the original post I would read that he is proposing that it might actually be better than now since the "contract" workers would have to pass a new background check.

It really depends how detailed the background checks are if they are carried out at all.

This is not a jab at CMS but a simple question. CMS has not always screened workers enough to prevent some undesirables from getting in and causing big problems. They do a much better job now but if "contract companys" are now going to be the ones hiring and paying less for the workers how do we know that tight controls on the caliber of people getting these jobs WILL BE MAINTAINED.. My opinion is WE DONT KNOW THAT THEY WILL... DO YOU?

I could care less about the screening. I do think it is pretty bad that essential person is out to be contracted out. Personally, I'd like to see the administration contracted out to the lowest bidder. There might be better results. Maybe teachers can be the next group to be contracted out to a third party

I am familiar with some of the large companies that have similar contracts as other school systems in the area employ them. The background checks performed on their workers match what is performed on non-contract workers (i.e. teachers, aides, coaches, etc.)
