My nephew lost his job when the company he worked for closed last month. He has been approved to get unemployment and filed on line 2 weeks ago. How long does it take to get your first check and do they give you several weeks checks at one time to account for the weeks you wait? thanks

You don't get paid for the first unemployed week. If he didn't set up direct deposit he should be receiving a debit card and pin in the mail.

FYI, last time I was on NC's unemployment dole, ATM withdrawals were free at Wachovia ATMs, but checking your balance was a 50 cent charge. Never understood that.

Thanks. He did set up direct deposit 2 weeks ago. How long does it take for them to deposit the first check? thanks

I don't know remember exactly, but a couple yrs ago (when I collected) I think it took a couple weeks (from when I was approved)...I think it might take a little longer these days w/so many people collecting (not enough people at ncesc to handle the demand....)

Hopefully it'll show up in his account soon.

I'd call the ncesc (if you can get through after waiting on hold for a long time.....)

It may take awhile for this. When my wife lost her job about 2.5 years back it took them around 3-4 weeks to get her a payment. This was right before things started turning bad for unemployment. I would expect now it may take a little longer than that.

Yeah, it was about four weeks after I filed before I saw my first payment.

More like 6 weeks for me, and I did get a lump deposit for all the weeks. The debit card you get can be used at most retail (except gas stations for some reason), or you can go to Wachovia and use the ATM to take it all out. There is no charge at the ATM for anything, only if you go into the bank.
