Giong to Asheville in 2 weeks and was looking at going 485 to 85 to 321 to 40. Would this be the quickest route?

That's one way to do it.

I think I85 south to Kings Mountain, then 74 up to I26 is shorter

Shorter doesnt always means faster but it is the simplest however this route consists of multiple of stop lights and only small portion is 65 mph. I would stick to route you planned its easier getting on and off highways this route.

I've done both ways from Indian Trail....

I agree w/Sunny. 85-74 MIGHT be shorter (haven't really looked in awhile), however the lights are a pain in the arse in Shelby....

I generally go 321-40 because 40 is like the autobahn..!

Shelby is a crap shoot. Either the traffic is nothing or you think that you're going to spend eternity there. Usually you get bogged down in the late afternoon, if at all.

The good news is that Kings Mountain & Shelby are both getting another bypass.

Its not just the traffic through Shelby, it would be nice if the lights were "coordinated" so that you can fly right through if you get a green light...I frequently travel the road and it happens alot. That's why from where I come from, 321 to 40 is the "safer" route.

A Bypass would definitely help...

LOL, Jack, I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but that is the bypass. Kings Mountain & Shelby both have a bypass. They're each getting a 2nd & they will be tied together. Kings Mountain Blvd will be extended north & go around the north end of Shelby.

I happened to think of this thread so thought I would update it. NCDOT defunded the new bypasses & the widening of Dixon Blvd (the current bypass in Shelby), to be rescheduled next year, so who knows when that will happen. I found this on the NCDOT website the same day that it was announced that funding was found to move 485 up to start next year. Presumably, the projects concerning Kings Mountain & Shelby provided a chunk of the funding for 485.

No use in being upset about it. The governor vetoed the budget for dipping into the fund that this area is using for incentives, & told them to find a new source. So. . .this area did not come away empty-handed.
