As an officer on one of the buses, thank you to all of those who have posted your kind words. I saw many members of the community standing with American flags waving to us and some community members in tears. I truly appreciated every single person and I'll say it brought tears to my eyes.

Fred gave 28 years to the city of Charlotte and was even played a role in the Katrina aftermath as well as some other locations hit by natural disasters. His locker is about five feet from mine and I'm happy to have known him and serve by his side. I'm much younger but he was never anything but polite and respectful to me.

For those who ask these questions, you are entitled to do as you please. I wish you all the best.

God bless you for your service, your integrity and your committment to a sometimes thankless job.

I am so sorry for the loss you must feel at the death of one of your brothers.

Try to remember, the world is made up of two kinds of people - those who actually do something to make it a better place, and those who do nothing but look for reasons to complain about what the rest of us are doing.

Most police officers like Fred, and like my son, give to their community without any thought of any gain for themselves. Most of them just want to do their job and go home to their families at the end of the day. My daughter in law, with her arms around my neck said, "I knew this day would come sometime, I just wasn't prepared for it so soon". I, for one will never again look at a police agency quite the same as I used to.
