So I work in Matthews/Stallings right off the 74/485 interchange. I'm thinking of moving to Huntersville. Like the area, closer to family, etc. etc. Thoughts on my daily commute? I was thinking I would probably take back roads to 85 S and then catch 485 to 74. Does anyone currently make this commute? Thanks.

If you're willing to make the long drive initially, it could pay off when 485 completes from 85 to 77. Will make a huge difference!

I drive from Mooresville to downtown - usually takes about 45 minutes.
Going home...it sometimes can take as long as an hour to go from exit 11 to 25

It looks like this won't happen until 2013.

At any rate, it will probably take you about 45 minutes to make this trip.

Try it if you can before you decide on a place to live.

I've done that trip from Indian Trail to Huntersville and it can be touch and go. Some days its great (45 minutes) and other days as long a 1.5 hours. As carolina_guy mentioned, I-485 is slowly being finished and the final loops may take awhile. They have kinda sorta identified where they have planned to put the highway.

Union County is a great place to live but a good in-between is Concord. Right off I-485 and depending on where you live, you may only have the traffic from the University exit, which isn't too bad.

Honestly, it would be quicker for you to take 77S to 277 to 74E than it would be for you to take backroads to 85 to 485 to 74. I take the former everyday to Wendover Road and after you leave the Huntersville/Lake Norman area, it's not that bad.

But as my fellow Pigskin said, Concord may be a better option for you.

Here some possible easier ways to get to Matthews until the 485 is complete

If you are living in huntersville around exit 25 take Hwy 73 to 85 south to 485 Inner loop.

If you are living close to exit 23 take Gilead Rd thru downtown Huntersville and it will turn into Huntersville Concord Road take right on Popular Tent Rd to 85 south to 485 Inner Loop.

I think the Concord idea maybe better. 485 is now slated for 2016, so I wouldn't count on that and the traffic is only going to get worse on 77, 85 and others.

I'd probably lean towards the Harrisburg or Concord areas. they're both convenient to Matthews, and if you ever change jobs down the road, these areas are also pretty convenient to the other major employment areas (downtown and University area). That Huntersville to Matthews commute might grow old pretty quick if you have to deal with rush hour. But if you love Huntersville that much, then maybe it's worth it for you You could always ask your employer about flexible scheduling so you don't have to deal with the brunt of rush hour.
