I know we will miss the food for sure. I might miss the beach too. The weather, not so much. I am tired of having the same weather all year round. I want a fall, winter, spring, and summer. The good thing is flights are not very expensive to come visit. I am looking forward to buying a house this weekend. Any suggestions?

You should have no problem here at all. I find it quite diverse here. My neighbors are orignally from Peru and my other neighbors are from all around the country so in my experience everyone here to is open to new cultures, etc. I agree with the other posts that say the hispanic hatred stems towards illegals. There's a lot of hostitlity towards that issue, which I will not go into. Anyways I think you have nothing to worry about. But I do agree with Flexysteve about the bad Asian food. My husband is from San Diego and I'm from DC so together we miss good Asian food. Good luck with your move and if you have any questions please feel free to pm me.

Default Different Experience

I am white and my wife is from Peru and speaks fluent english. The biggest problem we have encountered is that when my wife is out by herself there has been an assumption made that she is probably illegal and that she doesn't speak english. When taking our son to the dentist the first question she was asked is if she speaks english. Same thing (or similar) happened when dropping off registration packet at the school our son will be attending. I think the problem is that some people in the area have such bad feelings towards 'illegals' that they assume all hispanics are here illegally and have not learned the language.

I speak Spanish 95 percent of the day outside of work. I'll probably be mistaken for an illegal alien. I dont have kids so good schools are not extremely important but good quality of life is. I love Asian food so I guess I better learn to cook Asian food before I leave San Diego.

if you are in the company of those that, in all probability, do not speak Spanish, this strikes me as undesirable behavior. Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but I have friends whose first languages are not English & I rarely hear them speak their first language in front of me unless they are conversing with someone who cannot speak English or have a very hard time understanding it. I'd have to agree, many people may think you're an illegal alien.

I speak Spanish when I am with my family and friends who do speak Spanish when we are out shopping or at home. Of course I speak English to my non-spanish speaking friends. It would make it extremely hard to communicate if I didnt but if Im at the grocery store and I dont feel the people around me have any interest in what I have to say, I speak spanish. I dont think that's rude. I feel more comfortable speaking my language that is all. So, if someone is speaking Italian or any other language do people automatically assume they are an illegal alien as well? That strikes me as undesirable behavior. Speaking another language does not mean you are here illegally.

I am from Spain and my husband from Brazil. We do speak English but with heavy accents, nevertheless we have never had any problem with it. Everybody we have been dealing with here in Charlotte is very nice and polite. A couple times store clerks who didn't know me started to speak with me in Spanish which I didn't appreciated but that was all.
