I am looking for a smaller town outside Charlotte, that actually has a town center. I know Matthews has a small area, but where else? Any up by Lake Norman. I would like to find an area were you can take the kids for ice cream and a window shopping walk without going to a strip mall.
I agree with Sunny, and I also LOVE Davidson.
Two weeks ago I was with a friend on Sunday in Davidson on Main Street. We saw kids and parents with bikes, jugglers practicing in the park by the Library, we strolled along the street after getting a milkshake at the Soda Shop, then went for a walk on the college campus. Such a cool small town.
Absolutely, Birkdale Village (commercial/modern but more to see/do) and Davidson (historical but smaller and less to see/do). Great afternoon trips though!
Waxhaw also has a cute little town center. Ice cream shop, antique shops, little restaurants, hair salon, coffee shop, weekend farmer's market, etc. All mom & pop shops.
I'm not a fan of Birkdale as it's not authentic and quite manufactured to "look" like a town center. I guess if you're okay with that, then I guess you won't mind. The shops there are mostly stores you find in malls (Gymboree, Gap), not the mom/pop shops you typically find in true old neighborhoods.
Davidson is another one. Pineville has an itty-bitty one with some antique shops and there are plans to expand on it. Moorseville has one that they're working hard to turn around, too.
