I've seen some disgusting things done by food preps at various fast-food chains over the years. So, I am putting this question out to the masses. What fast-food chains do you know of here in Charlotte where the food preps always wear latex gloves and/or other items such as hair nets.

I can only think of two at the moment. Subway & Jersey Mikes locations all seem to wear the latex gloves. Any more out there?

I know that this does not answer your question, but here is a link to a page on the Mecklenburg County Digital Health Department about the subject.

There are not many that do require it but even if they do, that still does not make it much better really. I have seen people at Subway with gloves on handle money and then go right back to making subs with those same gloves.

I went somewhere else after pointing it out to them.

I honestly wouldn't expect someone being paid minimum wage, or slightly higher, to be too concerned about keeping their standards for cleanliness at or above average. The employees are being paid to make food, and not enough to really give a hoot about anythign else.

as a self-diagnosed germaphobe, i see no advantage to workers wearing latex gloves; as soon as they cough/sneeze into their gloved hands, touch a dirty utensil, handle money, etc. that glove is just as dirty as a bare hand would be. unless they're re-gloving 100s of times per day, i dont think it makes much of a difference.

this is assuming you're asking for reasons of cleanliness, and not just curious about the use of gloves for other purposes.

I agree w/BBSLM that gloving makes no difference unless you are changing the gloves. I have also seen employees at Subway make a sub, take cash and go back to making subs with their gloves on. As long as someone doesn't cough, sneeze or touch something gross w/their hands, I'm ok w/it. Unless you are picking your food from your own garden, many people have touched it along the way. Btw, places like Subway, Jimmy Johns, etc wear gloves b/c they are in the public eye and it "looks better". Not that it couldn't cut down on germs, in theory, but like it was pointed out, nobody making minimum wage is going to care that much.

If there is a place that wears gloves, the way it is supposed to work is any time the employee handles money or anything else they should take there gloves off, throw them away, do whatever, wash there hands, and then put new gloves on but I'm sure it doesn't 9 times out of 10.
