(although it sounds like you lived in the equilivant of a Ballantyne in Portland)
I can't think of any neighborhood in Portland that is even close to Ballantyne, let alone Hawthorne, which is is one of PDX's more alternative/electic neightborhoods. Some consider it to be trendy (Portland-style, not what the rest of the country considers trendy).
Having moved from Portland last fall, I think you will find some like minded people- but it's a small percentage of the residents here and may prove difficult.
My wife and I moved to Charlotte from Denver, CO about 4 years ago. We have really enjoyed it here. We miss those incredible mountains in CO but love the fall here in the mountains and really love being able to hit the beach when we want to.
We dress just like we did when we lived in Denver. If we go out, we go out dressed like we want and if someone doesn't like it, that is their problem, not ours.
Now, we live in the burbs in Charlotte because we have three kids. However, if we did not, we would be very happy with Dilworth or Elizabeth. Both neighborhood remind me a lot of Wash Park in Denver if you are familiar.
I have a LOT of patients from Denver, strangely enough. All of them have really enjoyed living here with the same thought that they miss those majestic mountains.

Feel free to PM me if you like.
ahhhh..the majestic mountains! no where on earth are they more beautiful than in Colorado...thanks for a different point of view..and I agree, no kids? Dilworth is a charming, eclectic area that could offer the same vibe as Denver. Kudos to you for "...dressing just like you did in Denver"..Charlotte needs more of that kind of attitude!

Amen to that! It is so refreshing to be able to go to a bar in Denver (or the mall, out to breakfast, heck, even to the park) in jeans and a tee shirt and not be stared at. Portland is definitely more my cup of tea, but I felt quite at home in Denver as well. Maybe more people will just move here and make it better!

I don't live in Charlotte. I live 30 miles out, in Kings Mountain. I dress like I did in South Jersey & Philadelphia, jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts etc. No one cares here. When I go to Charlotte, I dress the same. I have yet to see anyone dressed to the nines in Charlotte, but then, I go in the daytime, if that makes any difference.
I lived in SouthPark a few years back (don't recommend it) and one sweltering 98-degree day I popped into the Harris Teeter, cutoff shorts, t-shirt, flip-flops, sunglasses and the people shopping there stared at me like I was going to rob the place! (I'm 5'3", blonde and 120 pounds)....my point? Charlotte needs more "REAL" people to shake things up a bit! I don't need to wear Louis Vuitton to the grocery store to feel validated. Bring on the West Coast vibe...it would be a welcome change to the city for sure! and Charlotte, geographically is a BEAUTIFUL city....one of the prettiest places you ever could live..it just needs a vibe and a soul. Hopefully all of the newcomers will bring a little soul with them..

Eh. . . I draw the line on cut-offs for myself, in public, only because I think that after a certain age you start looking like you don't have all your marbles. However, not a soul has batted an eye over my less than elegant attire. If they did, I wouldn't give a rip. Why should I care what strangers thing?

"you say you want a rev-vo-lution..we elllll you know..." **the Beatles** I think the over all complection of Charlotte IS changing...for the better...more flops and guitars, fewer suits and Maseratis...that's a good thing

cutoffs used to be designer jeans...if they are worn in good taste, not "JORTS" then I say who's to judge? I like my cut offs...and I drove up in a BMW so clearly I didn't need to rob the place...
