I have a friend in town tonight, staying at the Westin, and we've made plans for dinner. I'd like to take him somewhere that serves Southern or local-type food, rather than soemthing he can come by easily in his hometown of Philadelphia. but I'll also have (2) 3-year olds with me. They are well behaved, but won't be interested in eating anything too fancy.
Any ideas? Its been a long time since I've eaten Uptown.

I'd head out of uptown down South Blvd to Mac's Speed Shop for the best barbeque in the city.
Plus, it's nosy and busy NO ONE will care if your kids are there
Mert's was my first thought. It's good comfort food, not fine dining. Love the cornbread, the buttermilk fried chicken tenders and my first experience with shrimp and grits.
I second Mert's on College Street. A nice walk from the Westin. There's also the Open Kitchen on West Morehead near the stadium.
I'd agree on Mert's, but I wouldn't agree on the nice walk from the Westin , considering you're bring 2 three year olds. It's a nice walk for most, but I wouldn't expect a 3 year old to deal with it both back and forth... that said, you could take the light rail up to Mert's from the Westin, and enjoy the ride.

It's after the fact, but soul food restaurants are in Philly & have been for a very long time. It would not be a novelty for this guest. While there are also BBQ joints there, I think that BBQ would be the better selection, in this case.
