I do not know anything about the Charlotte area and pets. Where should I start to look to find a Bichon Frise that is not too expensive?

Thanks for any help!
Maggie

Maggie, I will tell you that the price you pay can make a difference. Many breeds have genetic disorders that a good breeder tests for and culls. Cheap puppies more than likely do not have testing clearances.

A good breeder will NOT sell puppies to a pet store.

Breeding dogs is not a cheap, I am breeding my ***** now (another breed) and when I am done I will have at least $2,000 into the breeding before the puppies hit the ground. That does not include her cost, her training, her vet bills.

So will her puppies be cheap? No. But they will have generations of healthy sane dogs behind them. They will make wonderful pets for their owners.

I hope you do your homework, find out the genetic disorders behind the breed and make sure you see DOCUMENTED confirmation the parents are clear. Many people just say they do. Google OFA for any orthopedic clearances - ALL passing dogs can be seen there.

Saving a few dollars in the beginning by buying an inexpensive puppy can cost you THOUSANDS later.

I second looking at the Bischon Frise breed rescues - usually they can help you find a dog that will meet your criteria. Good luck with your puppy search!

The Piedmont Kennel Club is hosting an all breed dog show this weekend (April 9-10)

Piedmont Kennel Club: Classes

You would be able to meet Bichon owners/handlers/breeders at this event. Most dog people are passionate about their breeds and willing to talk after they finish showing their dogs for the day. These are the folks who will know of planned litters or dogs that are needing homes. So many breeders are involved with their breed rescue and may be able to help you find a dog this way as well. It would be worth attending the show to find information. Good luck with your search. It can take months to find the right dog--through breeder or rescue--but it is so worth the wait.

Also if you are adopting a pure bred puppy make sure they are AKC registered and not CKC.

CKC registration are for breeders who lost their AKC licensing due to bad record keeping. It doesn't necessarily mean they are bad but they are not as selective in their licensing as AKC.

Rescue her through Petfinder like silverwing mentioned. We found our last Wheaten Terrier mix through there and saved her through the Charlotte SPCA. She is a very sweet dog, only 9 months old.
