Maggie, I will tell you that the price you pay can make a difference. Many breeds have genetic disorders that a good breeder tests for and culls. Cheap puppies more than likely do not have testing clearances.
A good breeder will NOT sell puppies to a pet store.
Breeding dogs is not a cheap, I am breeding my ***** now (another breed) and when I am done I will have at least $2,000 into the breeding before the puppies hit the ground. That does not include her cost, her training, her vet bills.
So will her puppies be cheap? No. But they will have generations of healthy sane dogs behind them. They will make wonderful pets for their owners.
I hope you do your homework, find out the genetic disorders behind the breed and make sure you see DOCUMENTED confirmation the parents are clear. Many people just say they do. Google OFA for any orthopedic clearances - ALL passing dogs can be seen there.
Saving a few dollars in the beginning by buying an inexpensive puppy can cost you THOUSANDS later.
I second looking at the Bischon Frise breed rescues - usually they can help you find a dog that will meet your criteria. Good luck with your puppy search!
