My husband and I are planning on moving to Charlotte in 3 weeks because of a job opportunity my husband received. Were young and don't know much about charlotte or how to plan when moving. I wanted to know if anyone knew some nice/safe apartments to rent near my husband s job (dealership on south blvd near Sterling) but also near the mall and the Aveda Institute which I am planning to go to. We can pay at most 800 for rent. My other questions are do most apartments have the option of an alarm system? What is the average commute to work for people living in Charlotte? We also have a small dog and a cat.

When I moved here a few months ago, I searched different sites like rent.com and even Craig'sList for available rentals in my price range and with my desired amenities, and then I always checked the crime in the area of the complexes address through the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police crime site at http://maps.cmpd.org/cmpdnet/agreement.aspx?ref=quickSearch (broken link). And since I had a child- I also checked the sexual predator websites to be sure there were none listed near the community (even if you don't have kids- it can't hurt to be sure there are none of that type of element in the area.) After you begin checking places that way- you will get a feel for which areas in your budget are in more safe, desirable areas. Then, just be sure to make a trip to each place you have it narrowed down to, if you possibly can, to see the complex and surrounding neighborhood for yourself. You can also check private reviews of the complexes that you like at www.apartmentratings.com.

You can send me a private message if you'd like and I can tell you the area that I ended up in, which is fairly near where you want to be- and so far- I LOVE the area. Good luck.

I would imagine most apartment complexes do not have alarm systems, but one did when we were looking at apartments. It's called Whitehall Estates, and it's on the corner of S. Tryon and Arrowwood. I don't know off the top of my head where exactly that dealership is on South Blvd, but Arrowwood should connect S. Tryon and South Blvd.

I have a friend living at Alexander Place Apts on Quail Hollow Rd. Easy access to S. Blvd from there. All apts. come equipped with an alarm system. This is a very nice/safe area of Charlotte, within walking distance to a large YMCA. You should be able to find something (if available) in your price range.

I would recommend the Dilworth area. It is not too far from South Blvd or Southpark Mall and you can find rent for 800ish. Also it is a great area for young people.. I love there and I love it!
