Since we live a very sheltered life and don't often go anywhere that has a valet service, I was caught unprepared a few weeks ago when we went to Chima's. They have a complimentary valet service. We had no idea how much to tip so we just guessed. Anyone care to share what the going tip rate is in the Charlotte area so we are prepared if we ever go again?

This is a good question and one I have wondered myself. I rarely have cash and have been caught on this a couple times.

I'd say $5 give or take a few.

I valeted in Columbia for years, at a white tablecloth type of place. My personal scale was:

$0 means you just don't know any better.
$1 means you know better, but you're a jerk.
$2 means you're stingy.
$3 means you're practical
$5 means you're more generous than the average person.
$10 means you've benevolent
$20 means you're drunk.

In order of most prevalent - $2 and $3 are most common, $5 is slightly less so. $20 are more common than you'd think, and $10, $1, and $0 are rare.

Sweet, so they will think I am an idiot and not a jerk.

LOL!!! At least we were "more generous than the average person". At least I don't have to feel bad like we stiffed them or anything.

Hi bs13690,

I didn't call anyone an idiot. I said they don't know any better. This would be anyone who is completely unfamiliar with social mores of fine dining, which typically describes teenagers and poor people. They were typically grateful for the service, they just didn't understand how it works.

This is in contrast to someone who knows good and well how it works, but chooses to waste your time with the $1.

After all, it says "complimentary," and there are no directions to tip. Yet, if no one tipped, there would be no valet.
I didn't mean to imply that you called anyone an idiot. Sorry if it came off that way. I was just saying what a lot of valets might think of me when I don't tip. My wife says I am too paranoid, maybe she is correct.

I gave a dollar once, but it was because I went to a wedding and was caught off guard that everyone had to valet. I figured I could just park myself when I got there. So when I left, I had no cash on me, except a dollar. So that's what I gave.

I never have money left AFTER the wedding. I usually blow it all during the Dollar Dance.
