I keep saying its not Charlotte...its the recession and the location. Why did the NASCAR Hall of Fame end up in uptown? When people come into town for the races, do they stay in uptown or do they stay in the Concord area? Most of the other NASCAR-themed attractions in Charlotte are near the speedway and Concord Mills Mall. The NASCAR HOF should have been as well. For the NASCAR HOF to ever be a success in uptown, the city needs more and higher profile attractions in uptown to go along with it. The Mint Museum and the Levine campus is a great start, but more is needed to make uptown Charlotte a true destination rather than a place to go bar hopping.

The NHOF is located along Brevard Street, now is the time to finally convert Brevard Street into that strool district with shops and all sorts of attractions, b/c when you think about it, there's nothing there @ the moment and the HOF is kind of cut off from the rest of Uptown! If they can finally redevelop Brevard Street into that stroll district, it can do wonders for the Hall as well!
Unfortunately the HOF made the classic urban mistakes that are exactly opposite of what is needed for a stroll district. That is, it was designed as a stand alone "look at me" monument with a huge amount of street level being nothing but blank walls. (Bankster HQs have this issue too) It could have been much different. Monuments are for cemeteries and as we can see, they did a good job in recreating the the effect.

I think the answer to your question is in your own post. If they didn't put the HOF Uptown, when should they have started adding attractions there to make it a true destination? The idea is to get attractions Uptown to get people to go there. Speed Street doesn't seem to have a problem drawing people.
I think putting the HOF isolated in the middle of a parking lot would have made it become a very staid venue in no time. Without foot traffic and having to probably pay for parking, I think attendance would be less than it is now.
As for putting it in Atlanta, just because it is a bigger city is no justification. Why not just put it in New York and watch the high numbers roll in? Atlanta did not seem more central to the sport than Charlotte or Daytona, both of which have more racing history associated with them than Atlanta.

I agree. For out-of-towners that come for NASCAR races I suspect that many would not want to go all the way into the heart of a city they're not familiar with just to go to the museum. Especially if they are staying near the Speedway and there's not much else of interest for them in Uptown. Even more so if they have a bunch of kids in tow, or are in an RV (which seems to be fairly common). I agree that there should be attractions/destinations in Uptown as well, but it just makes more sense to group things according to who is likely to visit and how it fits in with its surroundings.

I think you're selling NASCAR fans short, saying that they will only be interested in NASCAR or racing attractions. The other museums and places like Discovery Place/IMAX Theater and Speed Street are family destinations as well. (White Water Center too). Cheap shuttle buses can transport people so they don't need to worry about transportation. The idea is not to create 2 areas of attractions to complete for tourist dollars.
What other attractions are out by the track other than Concord Mills/Speed Park, Richard Petty Experience and chain restaurants?
For that matter as well, so is the Charlotte Observer........
there is no article on the Observer recently grudging on what Atlanta has received. What does ATL have to be afraid of us!? HMMM!? ATL metro may be bigger, but certainly not better.
