Once springtime hits every night around 1:30 am I begin hearing crazy, wild, jungle-bird-style chirping from what seems like every tree in the neighborhood!

Never in my life before moving down here have I heard birds chirp like this at night. Actually, I've never heard birds chirp like this period, it ranges from shrill chirps to long whistles and everything in between (though I think it's all from the same birds??), it's very beautiful!

Anyone know what kind they are? There's some crazy wildlife going on down here in The South!!!

It might be mocking birds. They may be warning other birds that cats and other nocturnel animals are about.

Cicadas are suppose to come soon to add to the noise.

Yes Mockingbirds often sing at night. Sometimes it sounds like they are having a great party, happily chirping nonstop.

Every year someone posts this. They are mockingbirds and I LOVE them. I wish we had them in the PNW!

They are mating and it won't last long. Think of it as God's Easter gift.

Default Killdeer

The sounds you are hearing are from the "Killdeer". Do a Google search for Killdeer sounds and listen to the recording. We live in Indian Trail and hear them all night. You will also see them running through the streets and grass during the night.

We also have whippoorwills in our neighborhood. You can here them talk to each other all night. They are neat for about the first 15 minutes. Then you want to rip your hair out. I do think that there is more birds noise this year. My wife mentioned it last weekend. We enjoy it.

I hear them too, even though we sleep with a fan for white noise. I didn't know they were mockingbirds, I thought they were some kind of night bird. The sounds I hear aren't the same as the warning sounds mockingbirds make during the day.

We back up to a field with two massive oak trees, and there are owls that live in one of the trees. I love to hear them call! It's such a clear, beautiful, lonely sound. One time we went out to listen to them call and they were talking to another owl in the woods somewhere in front of our house. Night birds are the coolest!

Ok, they are mockingbirds, thanks guys!

After googling it I realize I've seen those birds all over during the day, I just didn't know what kind they were or that they're the same birds I hear at night. Actually last year there was a baby one stuck in the yard like it was confused, we kept an eye on it for awhile till momma bird came and found it.

I like the sound, doesn't bother me at all and I'll even open the windows sometimes just to be serenaded!

We also have some crazy bird that comes out at night. Not sure what kind it is, and when I look up the sounds other birds make it sounds nothing like the bird we hear. It almost sounds like a car alarming going off (thankfully a very quiet car alarm). It always starts every night around 2am. Then there are other birds that are also chirping all throughout the night, but they have a nice sweet soothing chirp so I don't mind them. But that one, its just not a pleasant noise. I usually end up getting up and turning my fan on full blast to drown out it's chirps.
