Cydena, I am from the Boston/Providence area and have lived also in Phoenix, Atlanta and Orlando. Charlotte, to me and my family, is the best fit we've found so far as as opportunity, family life, diverse neighborhoods, ect. We could not find that up North or in the West. Charlotte is far from utopia but it is very much an up and coming city and is a good place for ALL families. Including blacks. Up North I found much more discrimination than is down here. Most of the neagtive steroetypes regarding the South have proved to be untrue. The North was much worse as far as discrimination, shut out of housing option and dealing with the ol 'good ol boy networks' which prevail up North (at least used to).
Blacks can and do do well here in Charlotte, North Carolina.

I live in a nice subdivision in North Charlotte, near the Northlake Mall in the west part of University City. University City is a nice area. You might want to check out Mallard Creek subdivsions, which is a large area.

I am amazed at how many sophisticated, well-educated, wealthy black people I have met in Charlotte. That is not to say that blacks wouldn't be sophisticated or well-educated, I just found it extremely refreshing, coming from New Jersey, where there seems to be a much stronger feeling of segregation. What's wrong with moving into a predominantly white neighborhood? Do white people really make it that difficult to fit in?
Did you look into Raleigh as well?
I agree with brii, blacks do well and live well here in Charlotte.
Good Luck to you!

There is nothing wrong with living in a white neighborhood, but I prefer to be in a neighborhood with a good quanity of blacks, or mixed. Because that is my comfort level of how I want my surroundings to be. I did look at Raleigh, I grew up in a small town in NC about an hour and a half away, but it is not "city" enough to me, it doesn't have much of a culture experience that I would like to have arround me.

Not to blow up anybody's bubble. Diversity is the way to go. I love my people but predominantly black nope. Don't get me wrong yes their are nice predominantly black neighborhoods in Charlotte, but they are limited. I have researched north, south, east, west. The best neighborhoods or those of the diverse nature. Good character is recognized by most. During my home search i was invited in a couple of white and black family homes to take a view and in addition encouraged to purchase lots or homes next to theirs. It is what it is.

I agree with you harding123. I did not choose for my subdivision to be predominately black (We were one of the first families that bought here) but it has become this way (about 75% black) and it is what it is. However, I am happy to be where I am but I also prefer a more diverse area. I found that neighborhood diversity is more plentiful here than in Atlanta where I lived for a short time. Compared to the Northeast, there is no caomparision!
