I want to move to the south....is Charlotte the city for me??
Hello,
I want to move to Charlotte. I am currently living in NYC and I want a change. But I am too spoiled by all the culture, shoppping, events, and nightlife NYC has to offer. I am originally from a small town in the coastal plains of NC, but i dont see myself going back there, I need to be in the city. Can Charlotte offer the sames things that I am spoiled to in NYC???? I am also a young adult, so I want to be able to finish college down there and live in an area with affordable rent. What are some good inexpensive colleges and areas to rent apartments?? I would love for the area to be mix, but predominantly black residents and still be close to a lot of things. Your responses will be greatly appreciated, thanks. If however you want to come here with an open mind to a slower pace of life and no bars open until dawn you might just like it. Look to pay at least $650 a month for rent (more if you want a two bedroom), though you could live in a "predominantly black" area and pay far less - though I wouldn't recommend it - unless you like living in a dangerous area. The University of NC-Charlotte is located here and would be a great place for you to check out, there are many different degree programs offered there. You would need to establish residency for one year first though or have to pay out of state tuition rates. You could live among other college students in the University City area, or look to live closer to uptown for nightlife, concerts, NBA or NFL games, museums, restaurants ect... Neighborhoods near uptown to look for online are Plaza Midwood, Chantilly or Elizabeth.

For a "Small" City Charlotte has it all. I am a transplant from Los Angeles and found this to be a better fit. If we want to go to the city, museums, galleries, theater, sporting events, Etc we can for just an afternoon or evening. It take a weekend to go anywhere in LA because of the traffic and crowds. We love it here and there seems to be a lot going on. Rent is affordable and first time home buying is closer to having than anywhere else.

I want to let everyone know that I am not trying to find another NYC, I'll I want to know is am I going to be bored or can i actually find things to do to keep myself occupied as a single, young-woman. I like the fact that is smaller and most of all in the south where it is more peaceful.

I'm also from NY, although a little older than you. You should be fine with a little bit of research you will be able to find plenty of entertainment to fit your needs. However remember everything shuts down at 2 AM and not 4 AM like NY. PUBLICATIONS

Hello all,
I am a bit confused. I was under the impression that Charlotte was a fairly diverse city, but reviewing this topic I see someone noted that black neighborhoods in Charlotte are considered dangerous. Is this accurate? Is this how most feel about predominately “black” communities in Charlotte?

No. That's not the case. There are many predominantely black areas, or subdivisions ( I live in such one) which are not dangerous. Though some predominately black areas are in fact high crime areas it is primarily the result of it being low income and Not because it is predominiately black. I don't think the poster meant it the way it sounded.

I agree with you too, tetrust7. When I read the danger part of living in a black
neighborhoods, I was like is that what people think of living in a black neighborhoods. But we have to remember that most people never see the nice parts of black neighborhoods because our nice parts are usually past the bad. Once they see the bad they assume all of it is bad. So please experience it before you judge. Not all blacks live in impoverished, dangerous neighborhoods.
