Hi -

We are looking to make an offer on a waterfront home in Cornelius and would like to get some feedback about the communities off of Bethel Church Rd. We have 3 boys ages 14, 8, and 7 and want to make sure there are plenty of other kids in the area. Also, any feedback on Cornelius Elementary and Hough High would be *much* appreciated. Thank you!

All I can tell you is that Cornelius Elementary scores well academically and that Hough High is brand new this year, so the jury is still out on it. However, it too is expected to do well in school ratings over time

Good luck with your move and welcome to the Charlotte area!

Plenty of kids in the area (i'm about 2 miles from that area and kids will go to the same schools). Good reviews of elementary school. I've heard Hough High is overly strict and very cookie cutter (from a Sr.) but good school. Great overall area.

The Bethel Church Road area is an excellent neighborhood. There are plenty of families in that area. Cornelius Elementary and Hough High are excellent schools.

If we can be of assistance in helping your kids acclimate to their new schools, or if you need more specific information, feel free to contact our School Resource Officers as follows:

Cornelius Elementary:
Officer Winston Douglas

Hough High School

Congratulations!!! It is a great time to buy waterfront properties. The lake area is full of families. The YMCA has a lot of sports programs and camps in the summer. I am so impressed with the Y's around the lake. Corneilus, Davidson, and Lowes-Mooresville.... They offer everything from sports to sailing classes!!! I have 4 girls so not as familiar with "boys programs", (they are in dance clinics all summer) but the libraries and Parks and Rec also have summer programs. It may help your boys meet some kids from the neighborhoods. Here are the links: Lake Norman YMCA and Park Home (http://www.cornelius.org/parks - broken link)

BTW: There really isn't an undesireable area around the lake.... at least I have found one so don't hesitate about your choice or opportunity... you made a good one

You really can't go wrong with that area. Property on that part of the lake (especially main channel view) is some of the most coveted in Mecklenburg county, there is plenty to do there, and the demographics of the entire area are very high. The only thing I would caution against is to stay away from recent tear downs unless there has already been a significant price drop.

CMS is concerning, but maybe you could get your kids into one of the charter schools instead. There are several good ones in the area.
