Hello, I recently hired a guy to do a job on craigslist. He was supposed to specifically dig up dirt for a flowerbed that I already had edged up. The job was almost impossible to do it myself and he said he could get the job done quicker.

We had a verbal agreement, with no signed contract.

Fast-forward. He got to my house at 8am and said he was going to get started... after telling him that we had light rain the night before, he insisted that it would not take long and he will finish before more rain came down. Later on he called me at 1pm to tell me that he couldn't finish because it was raining too much. Something told me to go home and see the progress that was made..

When I got home on my lunch break, I was so furious that I couldn't see or think. What I saw was my front yard, trashed and his bobcat sitting on my front lawn. My trip to work usually takes 45 minutes and by the time I was 5 minutes away from my job, I didn't realize how I even got there, thats how angry I was.

My question is this? I know it may be too late when I see a logical response but what step do I need to take in order to correct this?

Keep in mind, nothing was cleared by HOA because they take too long to approve anything. And he quoted me $500.00 to do the job

Please help

Next logical step? Hire someone reputable to fix it.

Exactly.

When you hire someone to do anything for you and they are not bonded and insured you run the risk of getting ripped off like this.

Lesson learned I hope.

So you never told the guy where he was supposed to take the dirt from for the flowerbed?

You left a guy you had never met before alone with a Bobcat to dig up your yard?

Just hired someone from Craigslist to build me a fence, he was 50% cheaper than two other quotes I got. It too him longer to finish the small fence, but he finished it. Not the greatest fence but not too bad either. I am using the other 50% to put some flower beds and some plants. I would say it's a hit or miss when it comes to Craigslist, if you are willing to risk it and it's not a job that would cause a problem with the house, I would hire them. Now, Nike, I think you need to talk to the guy before you hire someone, explain to him what needs to be done and maybe work from home the day he is there. Don't pay him his money upfront give him some, but hold the rest till he clean up everything and you are satisfied with the results or at least it look someone close to what you wanted done. Good luck.
